Dame Margot Fonteyn, an English prima ballerina, is best known for her roles in classical ballets, including The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and Romeo and Juliet, to name a few. She made her debut in 1934 and spent her entire career with England’s Royal Ballet. During the peak of her career, she lived in a sprawling mansion in London’s posh Knightsbridge neighborhood, opposite the Victoria & Albert Museum. It was built in 1928 and she lived here in the 1950s and 1960s with her husband.

Now, developer Caudwell has brought her former mansion—called the Fonteyn House—to market for $85.5 million (or £65 million). Fonteyn once hosted several notable figures inside the historic home, including Yves Saint Laurent, Hollywood actor John Wayne, HRH Princess Margaret, and dancer Rudolf Nureyev, among others. In 1955, Fonteyn married Dr. Roberto Emilio Arias, the son of Panama’s president. Following their wedding, Arias was appointed as the Panamanian Ambassador, and the home served as the official residence of the Ambassador of Panama. The mansion has been lovingly restored and completely redesigned by GMA Architecture, but retains many of its original Art Deco design elements and period details, like the garden facade, decorative elements, French windows, and ornamental balconies.

One of the grandest homes to hit the London market this year, the residence spans 16,000 square feet and is spread across six floors. There are six sumptuous bedrooms, three family/living rooms, a movie theater/club room, a 49-foot indoor pool, health spa, gym, garden gallery, walled garden, an outside dining terrace, and a rooftop with a kitchen and bar and views of the V&A Museum.

The main reception room connects to the garden gallery and can be opened to create an entertaining area for up to 100 guests. The chic Smallbone-designed kitchen is nearby and features a marble island, state-of-the-art appliances, a dining table for up to 12, and custom millwork. The second floor is designated exclusively for the primary suite and has two separate bedrooms, dual closets, dual bathrooms clad in rare marble, and a bay window with a Juliet balcony. The entire home is awash in natural light thanks to the oversized windows and feels bright and airy from the soaring ceilings and a neutral color palette with glossy accents and striking light fixtures.

The home is designed for elegant entertaining. There’s a chic club room that looks like a private members’ club and has a large movie screen and seating area, cocktail bar, and wine cellar. To relax, take to the spa level, which features a 49-foot indoor swimming pool crafted from travertine marble, a soothing waterfall feature, glass-walled sauna, marble-clad steam room, massage bed, hair salon, and changing rooms with a walk-in shower. The additional bedrooms are filtered throughout the additional levels, including a penthouse suite on the top floor, which can be used as either a bedroom or studio. The rooftop’s barbecue and al fresco dining makes it the ideal spot to host gatherings. Finally, there’s a staff apartment, staff entrances and staircases, and a second prep kitchen.

The Fonteyn House is listed for $85.5 million (or £65 million). See more photos below.
