Marina Abramović’s Inflatable Installation to Inaugurate Balloon Museum’s New York City Flagship
Opening July 2026, the landmark commission will help open the institution's new location in the Tin Building
The Balloon Museum announced on Thursday a new commission by Marina Abramović, which marks the first inflatable installation for the artist and will inaugurate the institution’s New York City flagship location, set to open in July. Titling her work SNOWY/WINDY/SPRING ON THE PLANET Z, Abramović seeks to create a multisensory dreamscape for visitors.
“Creating this world through the language of inflatables felt like the perfect medium to bring it to life,” Abramović said in a statement. “The balloon is, fundamentally, a childhood object. But beyond its innocence, the balloon carries a deeper philosophical charge. Its existence depends entirely on air. It is an object made from the most immaterial of substances, and yet it takes on form, weight, even personality. In this way, it is very close to performance itself.”
Working closely with the Balloon Museum’s engineering and design teams, Abramović’s installation is an immersive environment with shoulder-high inflatable blades of grass, drawing parallels from the landscapes of her childhood in Belgrade. Balloons circulated through forced air will emulate “snowflakes” throughout the walking path.
“We are honored to realize Marina’s vision at this pivotal moment in her career,” said Roberto Fantuazzi, CEO & Founder of Lux Entertainment, the experiential production company behind The Balloon Museum. “Our mission has always been to provide artists with the technical and conceptual expertise to explore working with inflatable art. SNOWY / WINDY / SPRING ON THE PLANET Z exemplifies that commitment.”
The Balloon Museum will open to the public in July 2026 located in the Tin Building on the waterfront in Seaport.
