Dom Pérignon Taps the Guggenheim Bilbao to Debut Its Next Selection of Vintages
For the sixth edition of Révélations, the storied champagne house hosts art installations with Claudine Drai and Tilda Swinton that celebrate the theme of place
Since its inception, Dom Pérignon’s annual Révélations has served as an immersive experience that celebrates the art of making champagne with a creative crowd gathering in a cultural space for tastings, epicurean adventure, and artistic dialogue. Changing locations every year, this one-day-only happening was recently hosted at the Guggenheim Bilbao, where Dom Pérignon Chef de Cave Vincent Chaperon unveiled four vintages amongst a series of creative events under the theme of place.
The June 4 happening kicked off at the gallery Carreras Mugica where an installation of bottles painted with words evocative of the champagne-making process was surrounded by artworks by Claudine Drai, who channeled her experience of visiting the vineyard into ethereal wall works of intricately folded Japanese paper. Drai also crafted like-minded poems that draped from the ceiling on sheer tapestries, while on the walls were haunting photographs of the Dom Pérignon vineyards by the brand’s managing director, Jacques Giraco.
Afterwards, guests migrated to the nearby Guggenheim Bilbao for a performance of “House of Gestures,” a work exploring “the relationship between body, gesture, presence, and narrative” by Tilda Swinton and Olivier Saillard, followed by a four-hands Harmony Dinner. The epicurean experience conceived by the three-Michelin-star chef of Azurmendi, Eneko Atxa, and Nerua at Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Michelin-star chef Josean Alija presented dishes representing ideas around sea, earth, vibrant serenity, and heartbeat, the latter a decadent dish of tomato, strawberry, and yogurt.
Throughout the day, guests sampled the latest Dom Pérignon offerings, including a 2018 vintage, the first to be entirely conceived by chef de cave Chaperon. Glasses also brimmed with Dom Pérignon vintage 2017, vintage 2008-Plénitude 2, and vintage rosé 2010. “When we think about the life of Dom Pierre Pérignon, it revolved around a place, and a community,” suggests Chaperon. “We are heirs of the places where he crafted his creations, and we have to carry on his quest for perfection.”
