Crystal Bridges Installs Two Historic Tiffany Stained Glass Windows
Mountain Landscape (Root Memorial Window) (1917) and the Arkansas State Window (c. 1931) are on view in the Visions of America Galleries
Ahead of its major expansion opening, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art has installed two historic Tiffany Studios stained-glass windows in its Visions of America Galleries, where visitors are introduced to and invited to engage with five centuries of American art. “The installation of these extraordinary windows is deeply meaningful for Crystal Bridges,” says Jen Padgett, Windgate curator of craft. “They exemplify the skilled making and creative vision of Tiffany Studios, revealing the power of glass transformed through experimentation, skill, and luminous effects.”
The museum acquired Mountain Landscape (Root Memorial Window) in 2025 from Sunset Ridge Church and Collective in San Antonio, Texas. It had been installed at the chapel for 94 years, but was initially commissioned in 1917 by the Woodmen of the World organization as a tribute to founder Joseph Cullen Root. Designed by Agnes F. Northrop at Tiffany Studios, the nine-foot-tall wonder depicts a cascading waterfall framed by lush foliage.
Arkansas State Window, which was gifted to the museum by Sunset Ridge Church and Collective, was created in 1931 and also commissioned by Woodmen of the World. The historic window will expand the story of Mountain Landscape in the galleries.
Padgett reflected on the importance of the Tiffany windows as part of growth for Crystal Bridges: “As we prepare to open our expanded galleries this June, these works reflect the museum’s growing commitment to craft and to broadening the materials and traditions represented in our vision of American art.” The monumental moment comes ahead of the museum’s expansion opening, set for June 6 and 7. The new venture adds 114,000 square feet of space, designed by Safdie Architects.
