Hotel of the Week: This Spectacular London Hotel Boasts Exquisite Suites by Design’s Top Talents
At The Emory, Andre Fu, Patricia Urquiola, and Champalimaud Design cultivated sumptuous suites while Rémi Tessier orchestrated the look of the Jean-Georges Vongerichten helmed restaurant
It’s a coup for a new hotel to announce interiors by one of the design industry’s top talents, but new London destination The Emory opened its gleaming doors with spaces crafted by a bevy of the world’s most visionary creatives. Ensconced in a modernist glass tower envisioned by the late Richard Rogers and Ivan Harbour of British architectural firm RSHP are sumptuous suites conceived by André Fu, Patricia Urquiola, Champalimaud Design, Pierre-Yves Rochon, and Rigby & Rigby, with public spaces orchestrated by renowned expert Rémi Tessier.
Yet for all the hotel’s star power, the aesthetics whisper luxury. Outside, the architects conceived a structure with strong metal “sails,” yet the overall form nods to the intricate art of Swiss watchmaking. “Every element of the sail structure reflects a meticulous attention to detail, where the beauty of movement is apparent, and nothing is hidden,” says Harbour. “The aspect of timelessness is very powerful in architecture. It is important to create buildings and places with impact and longevity, whose role is more than just aesthetic. The integrity of the central idea of The Emory, the distinctive skeleton, the building frame, is rooted in basic original thinking and will give it a unique timelessness.”
Inside the sophisticated structure, located on the edge of London’s Knightsbridge and Belgravia districts, a striking stair rendered in a vivid shade dubbed Richard Rogers Pink gives a cinematic spark to the otherwise monochromatic entry. The punctuating hue pops up throughout the property, particularly in Surrenne, the private members club where guests can access a wealth of groundbreaking and innovative wellness treatments, such as facials utilizing everything from ultrasound and Oxygeneo to FaceGym techniques, a wide variety of rejuvenating massages, or restorative body treatments using decadent natural ingredients like olive-based soap or Himalayan sea salt.
Tessier conceived The Emory’s multitude of dining spaces, including the main floor’s abc kitchens, featuring a menu by acclaimed chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten with artworks by Damien Hirst, and Emory Bar, a sexy cocktail spot punctuated by a gorgeous glass work by Brian Clarke. On the 10th floor rooftop, guests can take in scenic views of the city from the Tessier-designed Bar 33, where every drink is created anew and decadent small plates range from Exmoor Caviar Doughnuts and Wagyu Beef Skewers to Dover Sole Piccata. Visitors are also welcome to unwind in The Emory Cigar Merchants, a gentlemanly lounge offering a range of fine cigars and decadent spirits.
The all-suite hotel features 61 remarkable accommodations with every two floors rendered by a different design luminary. At The Emory, sumptuous surroundings have been orchestrated by Alexandra Champalimaud, Andre Fu, Pierre-Yves Rochon, and Patricia Urquiola, each outfitted in posh bespoke furnishings, while large-scale floor-to-ceiling windows allow for breathtaking views across the neighborhood.
