Steven Gambrel Lists Waterfront Hamptons Home for $25 Million
The acclaimed designer, who purchased the 18th-century Sag Harbor residence in 2002, has put his own elegant stamp on the interiors
Renowned interior designer Steven Gambrel, founder of S.R. Gambrel, has renovated and sold a number of historic Hamptons homes. Now, his own dreamy creation in Sag Harbor has hit the market for $25 million, exclusively listed with Corcoran’s Susan Breitenbach.
Located just blocks from Main Street, the 5,300-square-foot residence contains five bedrooms, five bathrooms, and two powder rooms. The designer reportedly purchased the property for around $1.55 million in 2002 and spent several years and more than $10 million completely renovating and redesigning it.
While the home has been put up for rent in the past—charging up to $300,000 per month or $800,000 per summer—this is the first time it has been listed for sale. Parts of the dwelling date back to 1790, and Gambrel has modernized the interiors to his exacting standards while retaining classic old-world charm.
There were many additions over the years, including a library dating to 1900 and a living room built in the 1950s. Among Gambrel’s additions is a converted garage that’s been turned into a stunning living area with vaulted ceilings and a wood-burning fireplace. It’s designed with traditional 19th-century flair and reminiscent of the Hamptons home during this time period. The white façade, meanwhile, features charming light-blue window treatments, a common color thread used inside and out that recalls the water nearby. Incredible landscaping makes the house pop in the summertime.
The warm and inviting home is also complete with antique pine floors, reclaimed wide-plank wood on the walls, and stone sourced from the sculpture garden at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, seen in the kitchen. Never one to shy from bold and dramatic art pieces and color, Gambrel outfitted a room in a cheerful salmon pink, while other areas feature black painted archways, ceilings, and windows. Outside, a bluestone patio with a heated gunite pool overlooks the rolling lawns and cove beyond.
Perched along Upper Sag Harbor Cove, the compound also includes a waterfront guest house, stone barn dining pavilion, outdoor dining, and a deep-water dock, perfect for boating aficionados. Ideal for entertaining both large and intimate groups, the bluestone pavilion is a fun and rustic ancillary structure with a dining table and wood-burning fireplace. Rare is it that a waterfront property with this design caliber and historic pedigree, complete with all the amenities you could need, comes to market.
Gambrel and his husband, James Anderson, got married on the property in 2017 and several notable guests, including Martha Stewart, attended the nuptials. The couple has additional properties throughout New York, including one in Bedford and another in the Hamptons.
