With Independence Day upon us and the Olympics close on its heels, it’s a good time to reflect and be thankful for the freedom, liberty, and democracy our country stands for. One way many Americans show their patriotism is by wearing the symbolic colors of red, white, and blue in solidarity with the American flag.

The United States was obviously not the first country to use these colors, but one can argue that our chosen design is perhaps the most unique. To give a little history, the original flag represented the first 13 states with white stars in a field of blue, a constellation that has continued to grow into the 50 states of today. The red and white alternating stripes were meant to emanate the rays of the sun. Later, Founding Father Charles Thomson explained the meanings behind the color choices, with “white standing for purity and innocence, red for hardiness and valor, and blue for vigilance, perseverance and justice.”

Colors evoke different feelings, and while red, white and blue have become synonymous with American pride and freedom to citizens of the U.S., they also have been known to create the most epic room schemes.  Mark D. Sikes’s dining room at the 2015 Kips Bay Decorator Show House in New York, with its overall red and white scheme with accents of blue, immediately comes to mind, as does the Dorothy Draper stairwell in the lobby of the iconic Greenbrier hotel, featuring Zuber’s Scenes of North America panoramic mural in her famed color palette of “Monticello” blue, white, hints of red (and, of course, some green mixed in!).
