After nearly three decades in the design industry, Richard Mishaan has cultivated an enthusiastic audience for his inspired interiors that layer refined traditionalism with contemporary joie de vivre. His exuberant spaces filled three vibrant monographs and animated Galerie’s 2021 House of Art & Design, where he crafted an attention grabbing main suite, enveloped in striking blue and white fabrics and wallpapers that served as a rich backdrop for verdant landscape paintings by David Hockney and Jane Freilicher.

A prolific host, he knows the ins-and-outs of setting a picturesque tablescape or cultivating an unforgettable dining room, and his dynamic style sense made his Greenwich Village shop Homer a must-stop for any aesthete. Here, Mishaan demonstrates his talents for finding just the right pieces to enliven any room or make a holiday ensemble sing.

“My obsession with Elsa Peretti started in 1979 when I saw her beautiful pieces at Halston’s house. I’ve been collecting as many pieces as I could whenever there was an occasion. It’s timeless and the most elegant design to this day. These sterling silver candlesticks are good as a single or in multitudes!”

“Since I stopped drinking a year ago (as have so many people I know), I love a good mocktail. The thing is that without a bartender and a million ingredients it’s hard to make anything great. These drinks, such as the alcohol-free Prosecco and the Amalfi Spritz, are delicious just by snapping the top. Add ice and think of me as you say yum!”

“Elephants are good luck according to an old family tradition started by my maternal grandfather. I think they’re beautiful. So if you’re lucky enough to get a Hermès lacquer one as a gift, then the old tale is proven true! I’m keeping my fingers crossed.”

“I don’t know what we did to stay warm and be super comfy before there were fleece garments. However I know that as a light jacket or under my puffy jacket they keep me looking stylish and ever so warm. Arc’teryx makes the perfect fitting one and in the perfect color.”

“Any piece by Olivier Gagnere is a treasure! These limited-edition vases from Olivier from Galerie Kreo in Paris are future heirlooms. They are large and command the space. They also hold large bundles of flowers. You will love it filled or not.”

“This little shop in London is owned and creatively designed by a member of the family that has provided leathers for Bentley and Rolls Royce automobiles for decades. The quality is simply the best. The design in my opinion is spectacular! Honestly everything in the shop has my stamp of approval.”

Herve’s designs are otherworldly! They are crafted in his shop and overseen by him. I represented him at my shop Homer from when he and I were youngsters in the design world. Everything I’m lucky to own of his is in the “Treasured” category. From the small table top items to the furniture pieces it’ll be something you’ll have as a prized possession.

“I wear white Oxford button down shirts almost every day. It’s just the perfect combination of elegance and comfort. These shirts that don’t wrinkle and are priced as they are make it almost impossible not to buy.”

“This is the best tux ever. I’m known to be a bit fussy about my appearance—what can I say? When people ask (and it’s often), who made my tuxedo, I reply J.Crew, and they say no really. I show them the label and they are blown away. It’s that good. Try one on, you’ll want to thank me.”
