Hotel of the Week: Discover the Caribbean’s Most Exclusive Private Island Resort

Located off the coast of Antigua, Jumby Bay reopens for the season with a new beach club dubbed The Hut, fresh dining experiences, and rejuvenating spa introductions

Just over two miles north of Antigua, Jumby Bay is a 300-acre private island that conjures a quintessential vision of paradise. Here, glistening turquoise water gently laps at long stretches of powdery white sand, rows of palm trees quietly sway in the salty sea breeze, and miles of winding bike paths reveal the dramatic natural beauty of the island where black-and-white Persian sheep freely roam on undulating pastures and vibrant, tropical flowers bloom in abundance.

After being discovered in 1493 by Christopher Columbus and then managed by various private families and landowners over the centuries, Jumby Bay Island, named after the Antiguan word jumbee, meaning playful spirit, has always remained a hidden world unto itself. Reachable only by boat—and without a car in sight—this one-of-a-kind enclave is known amongst discerning travelers for its signature brand of understated, keyless, barefoot luxury where one can disconnect from regular life in utmost privacy and discretion, and where no request is too much.

Upon arrival at Antigua airport, guests are greeted by a member of Jumby Bay and promptly transported through a separate security line, bypassing the crowds, before boarding the property’s own yacht, setting the tone for what’s to come. In under ten minutes, travelers are welcomed by smiling staff on the emblematic rotunda at the end of the jetty.

The property has been managed since 2017 by prestigious German hotel group, the Oetker Collection, whose portfolio includes iconic hotels dripping in fascinating history such as Eden Rock in the nearby St. Barths and Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in the South of France. Jumby Bay, however, sets itself apart from any other beachside hotel thanks to its utterly unique accommodation offerings, its distinct British Caribbean flair, and the sheer magic of being on a remote island miles away from anything else. Dotted throughout the diverse landscape, there are 40 hotel suites and 14 villas, as well as 21 uniquely designed private residences, some of which are the most awe-inducing and magnificent island-style homes in the Caribbean. Each homeowner owns a share in the Jumby Bay Island Company, which runs the island and resort, and many of the residences are made available to rent throughout the year.

The spacious, light-filled Pond Suites and recently renovated Ocean View suites all incorporate a masterful mix of traditional Antiguan style with a contemporary beach-house aesthetic—think high, cantilevered ceilings, a soothing color palette of maritime blues layered with beige and cream, and an assortment of soft furnishings accented with textural elements.

In typical Caribbean custom, the indoor-outdoor lifestyle is emphasized, and each of the rooms is crafted to feel more like a home than a hotel room. Wide verandahs boast striking views of the sparkling sea and offer space for outdoor dining and sunbathing as well as a oversize outdoor bath and shower.

Thoughtful touches in the rooms abound—a whimsical stone sheep stands sentry at the entrance, awaiting any in-room dining orders. Hand-painted shells depicting traditional Antiguan scenes are left on the pillows each night at turndown, and a pair of bikes docked outside each room encourage guests to leisurely roam around the island and partake in the various activities on offer. For larger groups and families, the villas now come with a brand-new butler service, catering to guests’ every need throughout their stay.

While one of the main joys of Jumby Bay is slowing down, reclining with a book at the main beach, and enjoying the free-flowing Tattinger and tasty morsels being offered throughout the day, there is also a robust offering of activities and expeditions available to ensure a memorable stay. Along with the all-inclusive watersports such as kayaking, hobie cats, waterskiing and wakeboarding, there are daily guided snorkeling tours to the nearby Bird Island, a tiny islet measuring just 20 acres with some of the most diverse sea and wildlife as well as a circumnavigation tour, allowing one to get a glimpse of the striking private residences nestled within the coastline. Guests can also charter the property’s 40-foot yacht.

For those looking for the utmost in rejuvenation, the spa is tucked away near the more wild and untamed Pasture Bay. Centered around an open-air pavilion with a shaded relaxation lounge and plunge pool overlooking the sea, the sanctuary includes a steam room, sauna, yoga pavilion, and five treatment rooms. In a new collaboration, the menu of options utilize products by London-based skincare line Tata Harper. Weary international travelers should reserve the traditional shirodhara treatment, which is based on an ancient Ayurvedic healing ritual where warm oil is poured in a continuous stream on the forehead, melting any stresses.

An all-inclusive resort of the highest level, the island’s cuisine focuses on market-driven and sustainably grown fare with a mix of West Indies culinary traditions and a European flair. (The produce is mostly cultivated on the island’s own farm.) Guests have the option for all-day dining at any of the three restaurants: the recently-renovated Veranda, which boasts an Italian-inspired menu; the Sand Bar (formerly the Pool Grille), which hosts a lively Afro Caribbean night complete with a whole suckling pig, delectable assortment of Creole curries, and local desserts, and the Estate House, which is arguably the pinnacle of fine dining in the Caribbean. Housed in a grand former plantation house built in 1830, epicureans can enjoy a rack of lamb with provencal vegetable tart and a perfectly cooked Dover sole with almonds, butternut squash, and artichoke that would rival any Parisian kitchen.

Continuing to push the boundary for thoughtful guest experiences, Jumby Bay has most recently launched The Hut, Little Jumby, a beach club and restaurant located on an uninhabited island between Jumby Bay and mainland Antigua, reachable by a boat that departs from the resort every 30 minutes. Once there, guests can enjoy the cabanas and beach huts, and while away the hours with all-day dining and entertainment. Design aficionados can book a private dining experience at the Castaway Cabana designed by Houses & Parties featuring signature linens, custom chair covers, and Samuel & Sons trimmings. The evening includes a multi-course, local tasting menu and drink pairings created by French Michelin-starred chef Jean-Luc Lefrancois during his culinary residency on Jumby Bay Island.

And while the exciting activities, world-class cuisine, and facilities are certainly noteworthy, what truly sets Jumby Bay apart from any other Caribbean resort is the unparalleled mix of seclusion with discreet luxury that the island boasts. In a fast-paced world where global travel and five-star hotels are more accessible than ever, Jumby Bay is a treasured jewel that has preserved its authentic character and honors the slow rhythms of the past. Visiting Jumby Bay, whether for a few nights, a month or more is an unforgettable experience that has you looking to book your next stay just as soon you’re on the boat departing back to the mainland.
