Editor in Chief Jacqueline Terrebonne Gives Insight into Galerie’s Summer 2023 Issue
The Artful Escapes issue offers a design-minded look into destinations such as Malta and Panama, as well as transportive interiors by Steven Harris, John Ike, Jeffrey Bilhuber, and more
I’m writing this letter at 40,000 feet on a flight back from Milan, where our Galerie team attended the annual Salone del Mobile. Packed with the best design from around the world, it’s fertile ground for finding ideas that we’ll craft into stories for issues to come. Take, for instance, We Are Ona, the global series of pop-up dinners that bring together high design, incredible cuisine, and interesting locations for limited-edition feasts, one of which I attended during the fair at the Tennis Club Milano Alberto Bonacossa.
But Milan is only one of many adventures our editors have been on this year, each sparking new ideas and inspiring our storytelling, especially for this, our summer issue, which focuses on the most artful escapes. It’s packed with unexpected destinations—some a bit off the beaten path but certainly worth the trip, like the small island nation of Malta, where works by Caravaggio adorn a cathedral and Michele Oka Doner unveiled her sculpture The Palm Goddess for Malta. But no matter how many passport stamps we may collect, there’s always room for discovery just beyond our doorstep. I’m greatly looking forward to taking in the exhibition for the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize at the Noguchi Museum in New York; it spotlights 30 short-listed works by international artisans all with distinct points of view.
However, this issue is about more than seeking out new places; it’s also about bringing that inspiration home. In his new book, architect John Ike mines his travels to create fresh residential concepts, such as the beach house he devised with Italian influences that nod to the historic homes constructed of lava in Catania, Sicily. Each of the properties we feature—including the modernist masterpiece by Steven Harris and Lucien Rees Roberts on the cover—offers a taste of what it means to build your own special escape. All of which proves that filling one’s own home with a world of ideas is the best way to live artfully.
