Elizabeth Taylor’s Fendi Baguette Bag Sets a Record at Christie’s Sale
The Hollywood icon’s fanciful accessory set a new gavel record for the beloved baguette
Sometime around the turn of the century, Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor availed herself of a red, white, and black floral-embellished Fendi Baguette Bag. Yesterday, that Baguette sold for $21,590 at Christie’s, setting a new auction record for the Baguette. The low estimate on Taylor’s bag was $3,000, making for an above-sevenfold increase. Provenance is a rare spice, and the world cannot get enough of Taylor or the Fendi Baguette.
There is no doubt that the Baguette is back, and sprinting to a moment on par with its heyday. The brand is aware and ready to meet desire. At this year’s Milan Design Week, Fendi threw a 26424 Re-Edition Presentation event to celebrate a re-release of the iconic bag.
Taylor’s Fendi handbag may have set the new auction high-water mark for the Baguette, but it is far from being the most expensive bag ever sold at auction. That honor goes to Jane Birkin’s original black leather prototype Hermès Birkin bag, which sold for an astonishing $10.1 million last year.
Other highlights of the luxury handbag sale included a white crocodile Hermès Birkin 30, which sold for $120,650, and $76,200 for a chocolate-colored Evergrain Birkin 35.
