A 19th-century Austrian castle with ties to the country’s last emperor and the Bonaparte and Liechtenstein families has hit the market for just over $38 million. Situated on over 320 acres, the property, known as Schönau Castle, was initially built in 1895 for Archduke Otto von Habsburg and is located 30 minutes outside of Vienna.

In more recent years, an Austrian family has owned Schönau Castle, using half of the property as a private residence and renting out the other half for the purpose of hosting guests and events. The castle was in disarray when the family purchased it, as it had been abandoned for nearly a decade. Fortunately, “they renovated it completely with very high technical standards,” Michael Kremsner, manager of events for Historic Luxury Estates—which is responsible for the marketing of this listing—recently told news outlets.

In total, the castle boasts 18 bedrooms and 20 baths across upwards of 25,800 square feet. Design elements include idyllic English gardens, ornamental plaster, wood paneling, and a circa-1800 Masonic temple. Kremsner also emphasized the rarity of the size of this property.

The aforementioned gardens take up 74 acres, while the rest of the property is used as hunting grounds and includes an old hunting lodge. Schönau Castle, which is named after the town it’s located in—Schönau an der Triesting—is best suited to be a personal residence, according to the listing agents.
