A Marcel Sedletzky-Designed Home in California Is on the Market for the First Time

The Carmel Valley property, built in 1971, is currently listed for $4.995 million

Located in Carmel Valley, California, a 4,091-square-foot home designed by architect Marcel Sedletzky is currently on the market, for $4,995,000. It is the first time this house has been on the market

The property, listed by Sotheby’s International Realty encompasses 1.23 acres and boasts a total of five bedrooms, five full baths, and one partial bath.

The single-family home was built in 1971 and is part of Carmel Valley’s La Rancheria neighborhood. The dwelling features a guest house, a game room, a wine cellar, a workshop, plenty of storage space, two fireplaces, tile flooring, a three-car garage with a two-car carport, and a pool, which is surrounded by an oak grove.

One of the main house’s four bedrooms is a loft that overlooks the lower level, complete with treetop views. Additionally, the interior boasts curved walls reminiscent of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. As for the sunken living room, the aggregate wall continues outside, where a tiered garden is situated, with only glass separating the two spaces.

Sedletzky was a Russian-born American architect who ran a private architectural practice—known as Marcel Sedletzky: Architect & Planners—from 1960 to 1974. He had previously worked for Victor Gruen Associates, and later, Robert C. Jones’s architectural firm.

The original owner of this home, Bill Stahl, purchased the land from his father, who acquired the lot in the 1940s. Stahl was 27 years old when he commissioned Sedletzky to design this property. The home was designed to be built in different phases, as Stahl’s life changed and as his family grew. Since its construction, only modest changes have been made to the home, to keep the original design intact.

For the design of this particular home, the work of both Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright served as sources of inspiration to Sedletzky.

“The owner, Bill Stahl, and architect Marcel Sedletzky’s vision was so innovative, which has made the home timeless,” listing agent Courtney Stanley tells Galerie. “It truly is a marvel.”
