Hotel of the Week: Diplo’s New Jamaica Hideaway Is a Dreamy Example of Brutalist Architecture

Designed by Brooklyn studio Freecell Architecture, Pompey offers a remarkable private accommodation with a recording studio and curated art collection, surrounded by 50 acres of unspoiled paradise

Cantilevered over the lush tropical foliage of Jamaica’s Portland parish, a culturally rich enclave on the island’s northeast shore, the striking Brutalist form of Pompey cuts an imposing silhouette against rustling palm leaves, an architectural foil to the Georgian-style buildings that populate the country’s more tourist-heavy neighborhoods. But that’s exactly what Thomas Wesley Pentz, better known as the DJ and music producer Diplo, was after when he conceived the private retreat.

Enchanted by the unspoiled grandeur of the rainforest, lively with the hum of cicadas, brightly colored birds calling, and endemic plants rambling over the property’s 50-plus acres, Diplo tasked Brooklyn studio Freecell Architecture and Gia Wolff with conceiving a remarkable building that held its own against the visually arresting landscape.

Intentionally decorated by Sara Nataf, Diplo’s longtime creative director, in partnership with his assistant Katelyn Hinden, the main bedroom and guest suites layer rustic furnishings with sumptuous textiles. Textural, punctuating artworks by Pedro Reyes, Sofia Londoño, Veronica Ryan, Lucas Muñoz, Garnett Puett, and Vince Skelly—each dynamic work specially selected for the property—animate communal areas that open to the elements, allowing for an unfettered indoor-outdoor flow.

Also on the property, a one-of-a-kind 2,000-square-foot studio building offers musicians everything they could ever need for creative expression, with acoustics fully considered when crafting its architecture and a state-of-the-art control room. A living area provides an inspiring spot for collaboration while a tranquil bedroom and bath offer a zone for reprieve.

Adding to Pompey’s Edenic qualities, the private estate includes a well-considered gym with stationary bikes, a Pilates reformer, high-design treadmill, water rower, free weights, and boxing equipment. A hyperbaric chamber, climbing wall, cold plunge, and sauna offer alternatives for rejuvenation, while a yoga pavilion beckons with tranquil splendor. Outdoor enthusiasts can partake of the E-bikes and ATVs for trail rides, or saddle up in the stable for a horseback ride through nature.

Away from the astounding structure, the surroundings paint an equally enchanting backdrop with horses, goats, a donkey, and exotic birds roaming freely; 19 bee hives buzzing with energy; and an organic farm bursting with fruits like banana, guava, coconut, avocado, kale, jackfruit, strawberry, pineapple, and breadfruit. Available for private bookings, its a heavenly getaway for those looking to create in secluded splendor or a pristine perch from which to explore the vibrant Portland community, where coastal eateries, locally grown coffee, vinyl shops, and an energetic nightlife are sure to inspire.

“I’ve worked on a lot of albums, a lot of events, some movies, [and more], but I really think the greatest project I’ve been able to make happen was this creative space in Jamaica,” says Diplo. “The island has given me so much inspiration…from the first time I hiked from the farm to the hill to the swamp (we turned it to a little pond), rescuing horses and planting sweet potatoes and pineapples. I originally thought it would be a good place to ride out the apocalypse and learn to farm, but it turns out this place is going to become a home, a studio, a creative refuge for many artists. I hope it gets used to make a lot of legendary music because that is what this island does.”
