Historic $25 Million West Village Home Hits Market for First Time in 70 Years

An historic West Village home with a storied artistic past has come on the market for the first time in nearly 70 years, fresh off a three-years-long renovation. The cheery yellow single-family home at 125 West 11th Street—with an asking price of $25 million—was once home to sculptor Daniel Chester French, the talent behind the Abraham Lincoln statute at the Lincoln Memorial in the nation’s capital, and the architect responsible for the house’s enviable paneled studio with soaring 30-foot ceilings.
Following French’s tenure at the preeminent address, the residence was home to a long line of creatives, including Valerie Bettis, who choreographed routines for Rita Hayworth, and later author Isabel Fonseca, whose parents, Betty and artist Gonzalo Fonseca, were gifted the home—along with its culturally significant tenants—as a wedding present, the writer once told the New York Times.
The 1849 Greek revival home boasts 7,878 square feet across its six floors, and an additional 805 square feet made up by a private patio and two terraces, according to the listing. A basement is also accessible from the garden floor, and the home has retained its original brownstone stoop.
A den, a kitchenette, and a private patio, are also available from the garden floor, which contains the enviable studio space featuring vast skylights. Originally, the home and studio were separate, but Fonseca’s mother added a loft area to the space and later a new stairway that connected the interiors while also creating a large entertaining area that through the years has served many purposes.

On the parlor floor is an open living room, dining room, eat-in kitchen with custom cabinetry and marble countertops, and soaring 10-foot ceilings, according to the listing. The home’s five bedrooms are located throughout the third, fourth, and fifth floors. The sixth floor is home to a stunning living space with 13-foot ceilings and sweeping views of the Village and the Freedom Tower. The residence has five-and-a-half baths, and three wood-burning fireplaces, as well as central air conditioning.
