Monumental Sol LeWitt Drawing Unveiled in the Lobby of 425 Park Avenue
L&L pays further tribute to the artist with a digital display atop the 47-story tower
Packed with world-class museums, New York’s midtown now has another art destination to visit. L&L Holding Company has just unveiled a monumental drawing by famed American artist Sol LeWitt, which covers a central wall in the triple-height lobby of 425 Park Avenue, L&L’s art-filled Plaza District office tower designed by Norman Foster, one of Galerie’s 2023 Creative Minds.
The work, titled Bars of Color within Squares, features dazzling geometric configurations and vibrant colors. Measuring 39 feet tall by 13 feet wide, the monumental piece was procured by L&L and Foster from Paula Cooper Gallery, and the meticulous installation was done by a team of artists and craftspeople from LeWitt’s estate, who adhered to the strict instructions left by LeWitt prior to his passing in 2007.
There is also a digital tribute to the artist illuminating three ornamental fins perched atop the 897-foot tower, taking inspiration from the work downstairs. “From the outset, art and design have been integral elements in shaping the experience of 425 Park Avenue,” says David W. Levinson, the Chairman and CEO of L&L. “A visionary in every sense of the word, we were drawn to Sol LeWitt for the dramatic effect that his artwork has on the places and people that surround them. With this prominent and permanent new home at 425 Park Avenue, LeWitt’s work will serve to inspire building occupants and captivate passersby for decades to come.”
The Norman Foster-designed tower also features an immersive work by Yayoi Kusama titled “Narcissus Garden,” which was first shown on the lawn outside the Italian Pavilion at the 33rd Venice Biennale in 1966. It consists of more than 400 spheres with highly-polished, reflective and mirrored surfaces. At the base of the tower, L&L is working with chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten on a new restaurant named Four Twenty Five, where the lounge will feature a 24-foot painting by artist Larry Poons titled Hunch.
