An Anselm Reyle foil artwork presides over the drawing room of a Brussels residence renovated by Lorenzo Castillo, who designed the blue velvet sofa as well as the armchair upholstered in red velvet and a geometric fabric, both by Nobilis. The cocktail tables are by Kam Tin, the sheep sculpture is by François-Xavier Lalanne, and the rug was made by the Royal Tapestry Factory in Madrid.

A totem-like Aaron Curry sculpture and a penguin by Gerard Tomballe flank the doors between the foyer and the central stair hall, which retains its original bronze handrail; Castillo designed the lantern, and the stairs are bordered by panels inset with a Robert Kime wallpaper.

Los Angeles artist Aaron Curry has garnered attention in recent years for his surreal sculptures that often feature exaggerated forms and references to pop culture and modern art. This towering wood work, entitled Witch with a Flower Pot Head, stands over ten feet tall, while an equally impressive piece greets visitors in the foyer.

In the conservatory, Castillo clad the walls in a trellis that wraps around Louis XVI–style Maison Jansen sconces set against panels of a Jim Thompson chintz. The custom-made sofa wears an Anna French velvet, while fabrics by Lorenzo Castillo cover the vintage chaise longue and the top of the ottoman; the badger sculpture is by Laurent Pernot.

“The mixture of fabrics is just following your instinct and personal point of view,” says Castillo, who utilized a number of textiles from his own collection for Spanish brand Gastón y Daniela. Shown is one of his romantic floral prints, Aranchina, which fits with the vibrant spirit of the residence.

A reflective work created by abstract artist Anselm Reyle, who utilizes uncommon materials such as Mylar in his Berlin studio, offers a high-impact moment in the drawing room of a residence by Lorenzo Castillo. (His explorations with electrified neon were recently shown at Washington, D.C., gallery Von Ammon Co.) “I like art pieces that don’t match with the decoration,” explains Castillo. “And I don’t like to place them in order of color, style, or value; just harmony and scale are important.”

In the upper stairwell of the home is a portrait by Mozambique-born painter Cassi Namoda, who maintains a nomadic lifestyle due in part to multiple artist residencies, which have taken her from Mexico to Majorca. Merging Western and indigenous mythologies through a Luso-African perspective, her poetic canvases, such as this 2022 work, Between Meluco and Xaxaxaxa, reveal a deep emotional intensity.

In their collaborations, which run from woodcut prints to ceramics, Germany-based twin brothers Gert and Uwe Tobias take cues from their Romanian heritage. Among their compelling oeuvre is this untitled mixed-media work from 2020.

The couple’s bedroom features a velvet-clad Jansen model sofa, an ottoman designed by Castillo with a Lizzo fabric, and a slipper chair in a GP&J Baker cotton print. The wing chair is covered in one of Castillo’s own fabrics as well a Colefax and Fowler striped cotton, which was also used for pillows on the bespoke wool-upholstered bed. A Directoire gilt-wood barometer is mounted on one of the wall panels of fabric by Lewis & Wood.

High-gloss cabinetry in the kitchen provides a sleek counterpoint to the Castillo-designed pendants, chairs, and table, which add warmth and pattern to the space. On the table is a faux-cake sculpture by Paris artist Vincent Olinet, who cheekily nods at Marie Antoinette–esque excess in his irreverent practice. In June, the French talent made a splash with an underwater dreamscape he created for the window display at the new Hermès flagship in Abu Dhabi.
