Ralph Lauren made history on Saturday as the first fashion designer to ever receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. The prestigious award was bestowed on Lauren by President Biden in recognition of his contributions as a fashion designer, entrepreneur, business leader, and dedicated philanthropist.

What began as humble beginnings selling men’s neckties out of a single drawer in the Empire State Building has grown to a global success story, with Lauren’s collections—from his iconic American flag designs to his innovative home décor—helping to shape American culture for over six decades. Recognized worldwide for his timeless elegance and boundless creativity, Lauren is an iconic ambassador of American taste, style, and culture.

“America is my country—my home and its history, traditions, and values have always been an inspiration,” Lauren told USA Today. “To receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom conferred personally by the President of the United States is an honor of a lifetime. As a proud American citizen, I accept it with gratitude and great humility.”

Lauren received the honor alongside other prestigious honorees, including José Andrés, Bono, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Michael J. Fox, Tim Jill, Dr. Jane Goodall, Lionel Messi, Magic Johnson, Bill Nye, Anna Wintour, David Rubenstein, George Soros, George Stevens, Jr., and Denzel Washington. George W. Romney, Robert F. Kennedy, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Ash Carter were all posthumously honored with the award.

It’s the latest in an impressive list of accolades for the legendary creative, as he’s previously been recognized with the James Smithson Bicentennial Medal for his lifetime contributions as a great American and his leadership in persevering the Star-Spangled Banner, France’s Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur, and was the first American designer to receive the distinction of Honorary Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. He’s additionally been recognized by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and received a Lifetime Achievement Award among others.
