Elegant Marcel Breuer House in the Hudson Valley Lists for $1.8 Million
Dating to 1950, the recently restored residence in Upstate New York features original bluestone floors and a butterfly roof
A mid-century modern gem by famed Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer has hit the market for $1.8 million. Dating to 1950, the Marshad House is set on three-quarters of an acre in charming Croton-on-Hudson, about 35 miles north of New York City. Located right on the Hudson River, the bucolic Westchester County village has a rich history as a thriving artist colony. Breuer’s original client, in fact, was the art director for Look magazine, Jacob Marshad.
The current owners have updated the 2,300-square-foot, three-bedroom dwelling to include modern luxuries, such as new kitchen appliances, while retaining Breuer hallmarks, among them bluestone floors, a butterfly roof, and a fieldstone fireplace. The living area, once screened, is now completely enclosed and features oversize windows that peer out into the protected woodland beyond.

There have been a few additional changes since the cypress-clad residence was completed as well. The estate’s onetime garage, for example, has been converted into a 290-square-foot finished space and is now configured as a sun-filled artist studio. There’s also a separate garage accessed via a covered walkway.
Regional attractions include the Croton Gorge Trail, a popular fishing and leisure spot that connects to New York State’s Old Croton Aqueduct, plus in-town destinations such as Croton River Artisans Gallery, which is continuing the area’s legacy as a vibrant arts incubator by fostering local talent.

The Austro-Hungarian-born Breuer, an iconic architect and furniture designer, studied under the famed Walter Gropius and moved to the United States in the late 1930s. Among his most famous works is the Whitney Museum’s Madison Avenue headquarters, now known as the Breuer Building. Despite Breuer designing dozens of residences across the country, they rarely come to market and are highly coveted by architecture buffs when they do. Given its beautiful condition, this one seems destined to be snapped up quickly.
