Johnny Carson’s Westchester Estate Hits the Market for $5.3 Million

Built in 1928, the late television host’s Colonial-style manor in Rye, New York, is being listed for the first time in more than 40 years

It’s easy to see why Johnny Carson, the late former host of The Tonight Show, initially fell in love with this grand, secluded property in Rye, New York, part of Westchester County. Now, it’s listed for the first time in 40 years and can be yours for $5.3 million.

Located on 7 Puritan Road, the home was the former site of a barn dating back to the 1860s. In 1928, it was converted into a single-family residence that features stately Colonial-style architecture. After Carson purchased the dwelling in 1959, it became colloquially known as “the Carson Ballfield,” as kids would play baseball on the property. The celebrated television host and comedian helmed The Tonight Show for more than 30 years. He eventually sold the house and left New York for Los Angeles, where he spent the remainder of his career before his passing in 2005.

The home sits on just under two verdant acres and is anchored by a lavish mansion spanning nearly 10,000 square feet with six bedrooms and eight bathrooms. Listed with Christy Murphy of Julia B. Fee of Sotheby’s International Realty, the manor has been renovated over the years yet retains the charm of a bygone era. You enter the estate through a winding driveway, flanked by towering trees and lush landscaping, and are greeted with a motor court.

Inside, the house is filled with natural light thanks to lofty ceilings and large windows. The main level is equipped with a gourmet chef’s kitchen, complete with an eat-in island, ample counter space, and custom cabinetry. There’s also a family room, three custom-built offices, a spacious, inviting living room, a dining room awash in natural light, seven fireplaces, and a sun room.

Each bedroom feels like a five-star hotel suite, but the primary bedroom—complete with a fireplace, sitting area, massive closet, and spa-like bathroom—is undeniably the crown jewel of the accommodations. Additional amenities include a wood-paneled library, gym, sauna, and an ice cream bar.

Outside is a veritable sanctuary, with mature trees shading the manicured lawn, a large pool, hot tub, and pickle ball/sports court. Bluestone walkways connect the outdoor amenities, and there are several wraparound terraces to enjoy al fresco dining with family and friends. Rounding out the property is a three-car garage with a pair of electric car-charging stations.

Notably, the residence was also once owned by Fritz Siebell, illustrator of the famed children’s series Amelia Bedelia. He sold the home in 1982 to art collectors Rick and Monica Segal, whose Seavest Collection includes more than 1,000 works of art. As the current owners, the Segals have extensively updated the property and even showed off their digs in an episode of MTV’s Teen Cribs in 2009.

As for the location, not only is Westchester just an hour north of Manhattan, but the affluent area features several upscale country clubs, shopping, fabulous restaurants, and entertainment. This storied estate is a true trophy property within the Rye community, known for its sprawling mansions and epic architecture.
