Luis Laplace Reveals His Connection to a Rare Collection of Works by Oscar Niemeyer
The design force behind top collectors’ homes and many Hauser & Wirth galleries finds inspiration in a series of drawings by the famed architect
As so much of my work is focused on the intersection of art and architecture, this series by Oscar Niemeyer has opened up new ways of thinking for me. I knew it existed, but it was a genuine coup de foudre when I found it at Laffanour Galerie Downtown.
Niemeyer executed many preparatory drawings, and in my opinion, seeing his architectural practice through this lens reveals a different side to his creativity and prompts new perspectives for me. I have them on view in my new Paris atelier, which is where I go when I need time and space to create. It’s a place where I display objects that tell stories and prompt ideas.

Every time I lay my eyes on these drawings, I’m filled with a sense of awe and inspiration. The lines, forms, and sheer vision presented in these works never fail to evoke a deep appreciation for the artistic genius behind them. They’re a constant source of joy for me and my partner, Christophe, and a reminder of the boundless possibilities of artistic expression.
