Perched elegantly along the scenic Danube River, the new Kimpton BEM Budapest emerges as a masterful blend of historic charm and visionary design. This architecturally transformed 19th-century mansion, located just a breath away from the bustling Castle District, offers more than luxurious accommodations—it invites guests into a fantastical fusion of Hungarian folklore and modern design elegance curated by the renowned Dutch designer Marcel Wanders, a former Galerie Creative Mind.

Upon entering the property, guests are instantly swept into a narrative where traditional Hungarian motifs intertwine seamlessly with contemporary design elements. The lobby particularly captivates the imagination, where the enchantment begins at first glance. Dominated by an oversized stag encased in a dramatic glass atrium, this majestic sculpture not only serves as a focal point but also as a nod to the deep-rooted folklore and storied forests of Hungary. The stag enhances the whimsical yet sophisticated atmosphere, setting the tone for the enchanting experiences that unfold throughout the hotel.

Nearby, reception desks shaped intriguingly like upside-down eggs—a motif favored by Wanders—complement this narrative, heralding the beginning of a guest’s journey through a blend of storytelling and design. Wanders reflected on the immersive experience of entering the hotel, “When you walk into the lobby, it’s like taking a deep inhale before the unfolding story of the space takes you on a transformative journey. It’s about that initial moment of awe that sets the stage for what’s to come.”

The hotel, featuring 127 rooms, including 11 luxurious suites, is a vibrant testament to Wanders’ ability to weave local cultural narratives into a universally appealing aesthetic. Each room is distinctly themed around garden and sea elements, offering guests a captivating escape within the city. The garden rooms feature detailed illustrations of native flora, like poppies and tulips adorned with light wood furniture, while the sea rooms are tranquil havens bathed in varying shades of blue, featuring everything from bathroom tiles to an octopus-adorned headboard and wave motifs adorning the walls.

The Cosmos and Observatory suites diverge from the other guest rooms’ predominant garden and sea themes, instead embracing motifs of sky and space. These accomodations are crafted to elevate the guest experience by merging luxurious living with cosmic-inspired elegance. They feature expansive interiors that provide comfort and a sense of vastness akin to the night sky.

The Cosmos suite, with its celestial-themed decor, offers guests a chance to dwell in an environment that feels both expansive and serene. Meanwhile, the Observatory suite extends this skyward journey even further. It includes a substantial 800-square-foot rooftop terrace, designed as an ideal spot for stargazing or enjoying panoramic views of the cityscape below. This suite’s unique blend of indoor luxury and outdoor expansiveness makes it a perfect tribute to the wonders of the universe, providing a stellar experience that transcends the ordinary.

The lobby bar further immerses guests in a world of imagination and whimsy. One particularly enchanting booth in the bar makes guests feel as if they are sitting inside a book on a bookshelf, encapsulating them in a world of stories and dreams. This unique seating option plays into the overall theme of whimsy and storytelling, a hallmark of Wanders’ design, making the lobby bar not just a place to drink but a place to experience and be part of a living story.

Beyond its striking design and culinary offerings, Kimpton BEM Budapest is committed to sustainability, proudly participating in IHG Hotels’ Low Carbon Pioneers program, which underscores the hotel’s commitment to energy efficiency and renewable practices.

Overall, Wanders’s design for the Kimpton BEM Budapest is a study in contrast and harmony, a master class that blends the ancient and the contemporary in ways that resonate deeply with both international guests and locals. “It’s about creating a place that feels quintessentially Budapest yet refreshingly global,” he said.

With its thoughtful and innovative design, the hotel stands as a beacon of luxury accommodation and a testament to the power of design that tells a story. Guests are invited to step into a storybook setting where every corner and corridor reveals a new layer of intrigue, offering a stay that is as enriching as it is enchanting. The hotel celebrates the fusion of the old and new, embodying the spirit of Budapest in every meticulous detail and creating an atmosphere where stories of the past and present blend into an unforgettable experience.
