Dior Cruise 2027 and Ed Ruscha Are a Match Made in Hollywood Heaven

The legendary artist’s collaboration with designer Jonathan Anderson came together in a quintessential California moment at the new LACMA galleries

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art provided perfect atmospherics for Jonathan Anderson’s Cruise 2027 Collection for Dior. Models catwalked past highly covetable vintage cars under old-school streetlights in a film noir fog to music with an urgent yet moody beat in the new Peter Zumthor-designed Geffen wing at LACMA. The show itself was a tribute to California noir and Dior’s longstanding relationship to film.

When it comes to art meeting life, Ed Ruscha’s collaboration with Dior was a special high point of the show. Ruscha contributed designs for several Dior Homme buttondown shirts that displayed signature Ruscha hallmarks such as lettering, shadowing, and industrial flavor. One shirt calls back to his 2024 painting Says I, to Myself, Says I and his Gagosian show by the same name.

The shirts, purposefully designed to evoke archetypal Americana and California in particular, were paired with casually frayed jeans. Anderson acted with special purpose in collaborating with Ruscha. “When I think of LA, I think of Ruscha’s work, which has this fascinating sense of the mundane and how it relates to the city’s grandeur.”

Anderson drew on over a century of cinematic influences. The drop waists that started the show called back to the silent era, while using gorgeously vivid shades of purple and yellow that the early silver screen could not capture. Floral ornament abounded, especially the poppy. The spirits of Marlene Dietrich and Lauren Bacall emanated from some of the tailored garments. There were a few special hits on the all-important accessories front. A glittering domed ladybug evening bag brought a note of fun, and the Saddle bag has been updated for a more streamlined look. Some of the shoes had delightfully frivolous beading.

A dream list of Hollywood VIPs attended the show, including Al Pacino, Tracee Ellis Ross, Mikey Madison, Sabrina Carpenter, Anya Taylor-Joy, Bill Pullman, Miley Cyrus, and Grace Gummer, to name a few.
