Johnny Carson’s Former Bel-Air Estate Hits the Market for $40 Million
Proceeds from the sale of this Hollywood legacy home will go to three different charities, including the David Geffen Foundation
The former Bel-Air estate of Johnny and Joanna Carson is on the market, for a whopping $40 million. Situated on 1.5 acres, this circa-1950 mansion is located in East Gate Bel-Air—also known as Old Bel-Air—a small enclave that consists of sizable old estates constructed primarily before World War II. The legendary The Tonight Show host purchased the residence in the early 1970s, finding it convenient for his commute to the Burbank studio. Originally built for The Wizard of Oz producer Mervyn LeRoy, the home was cherished by Joanna Carson until her passing in 2015.
The luxe neighborhood features private gates and a security booth, while the 400 St. Cloud Road property boasts a sprawling motor court and two spacious garages. Inside the house are towering ceilings, custom details, and elite craftsmanship.
The 9,052-square-foot home boasts six bedrooms and 11 baths, as well as a spacious foyer that leads into a grand great room with a wet bar. The nearby formal dining area and family room possess scenic views of the surrounding lush landscape. Pocket doors are present throughout the place, allowing for an indoor-outdoor balance.
“Rarely does a property of this caliber come to market,” listing agent David Kramer of Compass tells Galerie. “400 St. Cloud is a true legacy estate, having changed hands only a handful of times since its inception; a testament to its enduring significance and timeless appeal.”
Outside the home is a regal loggia, complemented by classical pillars. There is also a gourmet kitchen, complete with a central island and a charming breakfast nook, as well as a wood-paneled den with custom built-ins.
Located within an eye-catching rotunda is the sprawling primary bedroom, which is flanked by dual baths and walk-in closets. Additionally, the property boasts a two-story guest house with a home office and a lower-level that works well as a fitness studio.
The celebrity-approved mansion also comes with a sizable basement area with its own wine cellar and plenty of storage. Other amenities of the estate include an oval swimming pool, a sun deck, a chic cabana, and a lighted tennis court with its own pavilion that offers a covered seating area, a powder room, and a kitchenette.
Proceeds from the sale of this property will be divided between three different charities: the David Geffen Foundation, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and SHARE.
