Meet the Kips Bay Designer: James Huniford
The design-industry leader shapes a loft area at the Kips Bay Decorator Show House New York
Known to everyone as Ford, James Huniford is the founder of Huniford Design Studio in New York. His vast portfolio of residential design projects is renowned for its signature balance of elegance and comfort. Eschewing formulas and fleeting trends, his style is recognized by blending new and old, and rustic with refined to create timeless, distinctive, and thoughtful environments that reflect the personalities of his diverse clientele.
He is a leader in the design industry, and an active philanthropist in the design community and beyond. In 2004, Ford founded Design on a Dime, an annual fundraiser which has raised more than $20 million since its inception for Housing Works, an organization working to end homelessness and AIDS in New York City.
What was the inspiration for your room at this year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House New York?
“Since we have the top floor loft room, I wanted to have a multi-functional room for lounging, a work area, and a cozy spot around the fireplace. ”
Please tell us about a significant piece that helps shape the mood of your space.
“One of the unique elements of the room is the 23-foot long built-in sofa. It includes 11 feet of seating, two 3-foot-square side tables and two 3-foot-square planters.”
How does your work for this Kips Bay project exemplify your style as a designer—or is it just the opposite, something you have always wanted to try as a designer but haven’t found the client?
“I feel that this room is a parallel to my work. The biggest challenge is Kips Bay makes you feel as if you are your own client. ”
What does it mean to you to be back working with Kips Bay New York?
“It’s a great privilege to be included. Since I live downtown, I love that this is in Greenwich Village, which is charming and magical spot.”
What does it mean to you to be part of the 50th anniversary of Kips Bay Decorator Show House New York?
“It is a monumental moment to be a part of this philanthropic and incredible celebration of an organization that makes a big impact for the cause. Kips Bay is an iconic show house that sets the standard of creativity, talent, and community.”
