Hotel of the Week: The Lanesborough in London Launches Bridgerton Tea Service

Fans of the hit Netflix series can dust off their Regency best for a decadent afternoon at the lavish retreat and indulge in signature sweet treats

With Bridgerton mania sweeping the world again now that the two parts of Season Three have aired, there is no better place to embrace the decadence and grandeur of the Regency period than The Lanesborough hotel in London.

Overlooking Hyde Park Corner and Buckingham Palace, the lavish property is located in a Regency landmark built in 1827 by William Wilkins, the architect responsible for London’s National Gallery. The retreat—located at the intersection of the Belgravia, Knightsbridge, and Mayfair neighborhoods—underwent an extensive refurbishment in 2015 by esteemed Parisian decorator Alberto Pinto, who redesigned the entire property with meticulous attention to evoke the splendor of a sumptuous Regency mansion.

This summer, guests can get dressed up in their Regency best and head to the lavishly decorated Lanesborough dining room—complete with sky blue Wedgewood China mountings and a naturally illuminated glass domed roof overhead—for a Bridgerton-themed Afternoon Tea worthy of the Ton.

For the latest in the hotel’s innovative series of afternoon teas, The Lanesborough has partnered with Netflix and Shondaland for this exclusive event. The limited edition menu pays homage to the era, which spanned 1811 to ’20; a time of high style and elegant parties. Carefully curated by head pastry chef Pierre Morvan-Benezet, the dishes are a tribute to the key families in the show in season three and is comprised of a selection of finger sandwiches and pastry tartlets, scones with cream and jam, and four signature sweet treats.

There is, for example, the “Social Butterfly,” a sharing cake dedicated to Penelope Featherington made with pistachio and mandarin mousse encased in an emerald green glaze, biscuit base and gold leaf sprinkles; “Colin’s Travels,” a dark chocolate sponge, with caramel, dark chocolate mousse, and dark chocolate ganache; “the Book of Eloise,” a cheesecake vanilla mousse with blueberry and whipped vanilla Chantilly; or the “Lady Whistledown,” an elegant grapefruit and raspberry mousse encased in whipped Chantilly with white chocolate décor with a grapefruit glaze.

For guests who would like to immerse themselves further into the world of Bridgerton, they can continue the journey by booking a stay at the hotel, where there are 93 luxurious suites and bedrooms. The multi-million dollar renovation by Pinto involved taking the building back to its original shell and restoring each space with a team of artisans and craftspeople to work on the embroidery, crystal, cabinets, lacquer, and gilding. For the guest rooms, the team employed five Regency-inspired design schemes using three classic color ways of pink, yellow, and blue. Each boasts original ceilings decorated with 23-carat gold leaf and hand-stitched bed canopies.

The crème de la crème is surely the Royal Suite, the largest suite in all of London. Extending across 4,840 square feet, it includes seven bedrooms and bathrooms, two living rooms, and large dining room—with space to entertain up to 12 guests. The finest craftsmanship can be seen at every turn. For a touch of aristocratic comfort, every room category includes personal butlers to assist with curated experiences during the stay, including brushing up on the Regency with tours of the nearby museums like the National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, or the Victoria & Albert Museum.

And if you don’t feel like leaving the hotel, it is also possible to request a private tour of the fascinating history of the hotel with the head concierge. As Queen Charlotte says, “a diamond is precious precisely because it is rare.”
