9 Gorgeous Coupes and Champagne Pairings Worth Toasting

Here’s to celebrating the holidays and the New Year in style

There is a lot of lore surrounding the history of the champagne coupe. Designed by a Benedictine monk, the glass originated in England in the 1600s taking its round shape from the bottom of wine glasses. From there, it quickly became popular as the vessel of choice for champagne and cocktails in France during the 1700s. One can see an aristocratic party from the Louis XV era drinking out of the bowl-shaped glasses as they feast on oysters in Jean-François de Troy’s painting, The Oyster Dinner, and, of course, there is the storied myth that Marie-Antoinette had a set of coupes custom made that were modeled from her left breast. Finally, the bowl-shaped glass made its way to America after Prohibition ended during the Art Deco movement, where it was made popular by the American “royalty” like Cary Grant and Jackie Kennedy, who kept its popularity going through the 1980s.

Not only is the shape of a coupe beautiful to look at but it is also functional as it helps to distribute the mousse of champagne more evenly highlighting the intrinsic character of the wine, and the best attribute is that it can double as a fancy dessert bowl or as a cocktail glass. (The one drawback is that the bubbles tend to last longer in a cylinder glass like a flute, which is why it went out of fashion briefly.) However, we are happy to report that after a few years of playing second-fiddle, the coupe is back in full force as the glass of choice for sparkly libations. And with the holidays and New Year’s Eve upon us, we have rounded up some of our favorites and paired them with the most artistic bottles of champagne on the market. Cheers to a Happy New Year!
