Most recently, the property introduced a program with Barton & Gray, a yachting membership service, which allows guests to enjoy the Charleston Harbor on a Hinckley while enjoying a beautifully organized picnic on the water. The experience provides a unique way to see the city and even explore the nearby islands. These types of offerings at the Dewberry, which also include a private guided tour of the Charleston Library Society and master mixology lessons, are exactly what keeps guests returning to this one-of-a-kind hotel.
But let’s not overlook what originally put The Dewberry on the map—its extraordinary design. Located in a mid-century modern gem that was lovingly restored over eight years, the hotel offers an unexpected design point of view in a city known for architecture from a period about one hundred years ago. The former federal building dazzles with an astonishing amount of marble, impeccable brass detailing, and plenty of nods to the region. The result is warm and welcoming on a grand scale that unfolds through the lobby area known as the Living Room with a brass bar and excellent cocktail menu. Terraces that wrap around the front and side are the perfect for breakfast, which must include a cheddar biscuit with spiced honey.
While all the guest rooms embody the Southern hospitality one would expect, the John Derian Flat is a particular standout. A recent addition to the hotel, this special suite is filled with the spirit of the New York-based tastemaker and artist shopkeeper known for his reimagining of Victorian-era ephemera into irresistible decoupage.
But the showstopper just might be the rooftop oasis known as the Citrus Club. Located on the building’s eighth floor terrace, the bar and restaurant, both indoor and outdoor, provide sweeping views of Charleston and its waterways. The tiki-bar mood is just as effusive as the cocktails, including the Dewberry Daquiri, Mai Tai, and Coconut Champagne Popsicle. There’s no doubt the Dewberry will soon think of more ways to outdo itself but for now, it once again continues to be absolutely perfect.
