The Collectors: Kelly Wearstler

The design dynamo’s elegant style extends beyond interiors to her taste in fashion

Audacious pattern, lustrous materials, and unexpected color combinations are all hallmarks of design dynamo Kelly Wearstler’s work. Often whimsical and always elegant, her style extends beyond interiors to her taste in fashion, which is on constant display in her inspiring Instagram feed. According to Wearstler, clothing served as her first form of creative expression.

“My mom and I were always going to thrift and vintage stores, just being really curious,” says the interior designer, who routinely mixes the old with the new to create something completely unique. To keep those ideas coming, she’s acquired a huge collection of clothing and accessories as well as covetable pieces from prominent fashion houses and younger, emerging designers.

Favorite labels: “I love Rick Owens and what Daniel Roseberry is doing at Schiaparelli as well as Ottolinger, a Berlin-based brand. And I would never part with any of my Alaïa pieces.”

Career influence: “Shoes remind me of chairs, which are two weaknesses of mine. They’re both so basic and useful yet can be reinvented in so many ways. I have these incredible silver shoes by 1017 Alyx 9SM, founded by Matthew Williams, who is now the creative director of Givenchy; oxblood Vetements boots with stamps like a passport that will never go out of style; and two versions of the Loewe Balloon shoes.”
