Bob Dylan’s Former Manhattan Townhouse Hits the Market for $7.25 Million
The Midtown property boasts seven wood-burning fireplaces, picturesque French doors, and a quaint bi-level garden
A slice of rock ’n’ roll history is on the market. Bob Dylan’s former New York City townhouse has been listed just in time for the premiere of A Complete Unknown, the James Mangold–directed biopic about the legendary singer-songwriter starring Timothée Chalamet. Listed for $7.25 million, the 5,400-square-foot property was built in 1899. Lisa Larson and Angela Wu of Sotheby’s International Realty have the listing.
The five-story dwelling at 242 East 49th Street offers a quaint escape from the bustle of city life. It features its own elevator, five bedrooms, five-and-a-half bathrooms, and an impressive seven wood-burning fireplaces. Other amenities include floor-to-ceiling windows, a security system, bi-level garden, and central air conditioning.
The townhouse is located within the Turtle Bay Gardens Historic District, a serene stretch of Midtown East that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and was once home to notables like composer Stephen Sondheim, author E.B. White, and fashion designer Mary-Kate Olsen. All residents can access a private park, Turtle Bay Gardens, that’s exclusive to lucky key holders of the neighborhood’s 20 row houses.
Dylan rented here in the 1980s before purchasing the townhouse in the ‘90s. He owned the property until 2005. He’s not the only bold-faced name to call the address home, either—other notable occupants have included director Franco Zeffirelli and actor Mary Tyler Moore.
On the townhouse’s garden floor is an eat-in kitchen with a six-burner Wolf range, a mosaic tile backsplash, custom cabinetry, a Sub-Zero fridge, a built-in breakfast bar, and stone countertops. The parlor floor consists of three pairs of arched floor-to-ceiling French doors leading to an oasis-like brick terrace spanning the home’s entire width. A front-facing library, meanwhile, is outfitted with soaring built-in bookcases and an accompanying ladder.
The third, fourth, and fifth floors include five bedrooms with high-design touches like hardwood floors, Juliet balconies, wood-burning fireplaces, renovated bathrooms, a Steamist steam bath sauna, and a walk-in closet. The lower level provides storage space, a half bathroom, and a laundry room.
