A Beachfront Estate in Nantucket Hits the Market for $22.75 Million

A “once-in-a-lifetime” beachfront property in Nantucket has hit the market for $22.75 million. The 20-room dwelling is listed by Bernadette Meyer of Maury People Sotheby’s International Realty.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own one of Nantucket’s most iconic waterfront estates,” Meyer tells Galerie. “Legacy properties like 1 Ocean Avenue rarely change hands—it’s the kind of place that defines generations, with a setting and spirit that are truly irreplaceable.”
Located in the heart of Siasconset, Massachusetts, One Ocean Avenue boasts 12 bedrooms, 10 full baths, and one half bath. The single-family property consists of three parcels with four dwellings: the main house, the Rec Cottage, the Stable, and the Chauffer’s Cottage. Each structure has been preserved and features early 20th-century design elements.
Situated on .85 acres, the 11,564-square-foot mansion was built in 1920 for Harry Lange Burrage, a banker and the president of the Connecticut Cotton Company, and his second wife, Mabel Davis. They lived here until 1923, according to Nantucket Preservation. Boston architect William H. Cox designed the abode.
The second couple to own the Burrage estate were vaudeville star Regan Hughston and Ohio’s then-richest woman, Maribel Hartman Hughston. The property continued to belong to the Hughston family (which later became the Finnell family) through Maribel’s daughter, Maribel Hartman (Schumacher) Finnell, and grandson, Michael Finnell, until it was sold in 1990.
On the first floor of the main house is a welcoming foyer that leads into the living room, which boasts a substantial fireplace made of stone and scenic views of the Atlantic Ocean. There is also a charming sunroom, an expansive veranda, a guest bedroom with a full bath, and two restored cabanas that are original to the estate.
Additionally, the second floor features five bedrooms in total, each with impressive amenities ranging from a walk-in closet to a full bath to an idyllic sitting area with oceanfront views.
According to the listing, the main house’s third floor is a “sunlit blank slate” that can be transformed to suit the future homeowner’s vision. Design elements include vaulted ceilings, numerous storage spaces, and a full bath. The lower level is home to a sprawling wine cellar.
