Steven Holl’s Scarlet-Hued Y House Hits the Market for $1.6 Million

Nestled in the Catskill Mountains, the 33-acre property also comes with a pond and boathouse

Architect Steven Holl is busier than ever this year, with a slew of projects—from the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., to a library along the Queens, New York, waterfront—coming to fruition. Now those in the market for an ultrachic weekend getaway can own a noteworthy piece of the luminary’s oeuvre.

Fittingly dubbed the Y House due to its forked layout, this scarlet-hued residence is nestled on a 33-acre parcel in New York State’s picturesque Catskill Mountains, about an hour from Albany. Holl completed the 2,900-square-foot home in 1999, creating a sculptural structure that nods to the region’s historic barns and cladding its steel frame with red-stained cedar.

Known for letting natural light dictate how his interiors are organized, the architect created a variety of spaces that take advantage of the unorthodox shape, with two of the three bedrooms on the first floor and living spaces above. Lined with white ash, the wings also feature deep south-facing balconies, which help the dwelling retain heat in the colder months.

If that weren’t enough, the bucolic property also boasts a pond and a boathouse adorned with interior murals by artist David Novros.
