Ford Foundation Announces Its Gallery Opening and Other Art and Design Industry News

1. Ford Foundation Announces Art Gallery Opening

The Ford Foundation Gallery in Midtown Manhattan will open on March 5 with “Perilous Bodies,” an exhibition that explores the injustices of social stratification and discrimination, the foundation announced Wednesday. The exhibition will include works by Tiffany Chung, Hannah Brontë, and David Antonio Cruz.

2. Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio win Royal Academy Architecture Prize 2019

It’s just been announced that the New York architecture duo Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio of Diller Scofidio + Renfro have been named the winners of the 2019 Royal Academy Architecture Prize. Diller and Scofidio, the team behind The Shed in New York and The Broad in Los Angeles, are the second recipients of the prize.

3. The Met Tapped Alicja Kwade for the 2019 Roof Garden Commission

The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced today that Berlin-based artist Alicja Kwade will create the next site-specific installation for its Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden. “Alicja Kwade, ParaPivot” is the seventh work to be commissioned for the Met’s rooftop. It will be on view from April 16 through October 27.

4. Lincoln Center Appoints 92nd Street Y’s Henry Timms as President

Henry Timms, the director of the 92nd Street Y, the nonprofit cultural center on New York’s Upper East Side, will be the next president of Lincoln Center—the cultural center that encompasses the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Ballet, and the New York Philharmonic, among other independent organizations.

5. New Orleans Museum of Art to Open Expanded Sculpture Garden

The New Orleans Museum of Art will inaugurate its newly expanded sculpture garden, which will play host to 26 new and commissioned pieces, this May. Among the new pieces commissioned for the garden are a large-scale glass bridge by Elyn Zimmerman and a 60-foot-long mosaic by Teresita Fernández.
