Genesis Belanger takes over the New Museum storefront window, and Sotheby’s highlights masterpieces by historic female artists
Women artists headline the week as Sotheby’s presents a special selection of female-painted masterpieces as part of its Old Masters sale and Pen + Brush brings 30 artists together for a group show exploring feminist themes. It’s also a big week for sculptors, between Genesis Belanger at the New Museum, David/Nicolas at Carpenters Workshop Gallery, Sebastian Errazuriz at R & Company, and Les Lalanne at Kasmin.

1. Genesis Belanger: Holding Pattern
New Museum
Belanger’s surrealist porcelain-and-stoneware sculptures, which depict everyday items like lighters, shoes, bottles, and various ephemera, will be installed in the New Museum storefront window. Vignettes drawing inspiration from liminal spaces like waiting rooms and airport lounges embody Belanger’s absurdist reading of the patriarchy, mass production, and chemical dependency.

Petzel
At Petzel’s uptown space, the New York artist explores new territory in a fresh body of work, in which he juxtaposes his signature graphite sculptures with inkjet-printed images of the same subject.

3. Lucio Fontana: On the Threshold
Metropolitan Museum of Art
Lucio Fontana’s first major museum survey in more than 40 years comes to both locations of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The iconic slashed canvases from his “Cuts” series will be on view along with his early sculptural works.

4. David/Nicolas: Supernova
Carpenters Workshop Gallery
Astronomy and Daft Punk are just two of the inspirations behind this design duo’s sculptural furnishings. Exhibited at Carpenters Workshop Paris this past fall, the collection makes its New York debut.

5. Furies, Fairies, and Visionaries
Pen + Brush
Thirty artists, including Zoe Buckman, Nidaa Badwan, and Rachel Lee Hovnanian, come together in this wide-ranging feminist survey curated by 21c Museum Hotel’s chief curator and museum director, Alice Gray Stites.

6. Sebastian Errazuriz: Breaking the Box
R & Company
Art, design, and technology intersect as the cross-disciplinary artist Sebastian Errazuriz presents three new bodies of work, which range from modular credenzas to a cascading chandelier composed of 100 taxidermy birds.

Kasmin
World-renowned landscape architect Louis Benech has designed an intricate environment for this exhibition of over 30 sculptures by his longtime friends, the French sculptor Claude Lalanne and her late husband, François-Xavier (1927–2008), known collectively as Les Lalanne. The installation, which resembles the artists’ studio garden in Ury, France, showcases several rare pieces, including one of Claude’s Structure Vegetale avec Singes chandeliers and mirrors similar in style to those that once resided in the collection of Yves Saint Laurent.

8. The Female Triumphant: Women Artists of the Premodern Era
Sotheby’s
Twenty-one works by 14 female painters from the 16th through the 19th centuries will feature in this curated auction event, which will take place during Sotheby’s Master Paintings Evening Sale on January 30, a leading fixture of Masters Week. The meticulously curated selection, which will go on view this week, includes works by Marie Antoinette’s portraitist Elisabeth-Louise Vigée Le Brun, Artemisia Gentileschi, and Fede Dalizia.

9. Master Drawings New York

Galleries throughout Manhattan’s Upper East Side will showcase historic drawings on the occasion of Old Masters week at the city’s various auction houses. A few of the week’s highlights will include an art lecture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on January 25 and a symposium at Albertine–Cultural Services of the French Embassy on January 29.
