Fashion Icon Giorgio Armani Dies at 91
The esteemed Milanese designer built one of the world’s most recognizable luxury brands, and expanded his singular vision into lifestyle, interiors, and hospitality

Giorgio Armani, the Italian fashion designer whose understated tailoring and rigorous vision of elegance reshaped late-20th-century style and laid the foundation for a global luxury empire, died peacefully in Milan on September 4. He was 91.
Armani rose to prominence in the 1970s with deconstructed suits that liberated men’s wardrobes and later brought a similar fluidity to womenswear. Over the next five decades, he expanded into fragrance, interiors, hotels, and more, building an independent brand synonymous with quiet sophistication.

Armani remained highly involved in his eponymous label, even in his later years. Last summer, he presented his star-studded Women’s Spring/Summer 2025 runway show outside the Milan Fashion Calendar for the first time. It was held in New York to commemorate the opening of Armani’s new multistory flagship on Madison Avenue, which houses the Giorgio Armani and Armani/Casa boutiques, Armani/Ristorante, and the luxurious Giorgio Armani Residences.
The company had also recently announced the launch of an interactive digital platform at the Venice Film Festival that will preserve the brand’s 50-year legacy through a meticulous catalogue of Giorgio Armani collections. It will act as a precursor to his plans for Milan Fashion Week, where the brand will unveil a curated showcase at the Pinacoteca di Brera featuring 150 archival Armani looks.
“In this company, we have always felt like part of a family. Today, with deep emotion, we feel the void left by the one who founded and nurtured this family with vision, passion, and dedication,” Armani’s employees and family announced in a joint statement. “But it is precisely in his spirit that we, the employees and the family members who have always worked alongside Mr. Armani, commit to protecting what he built and to carrying his company forward in his memory, with respect, responsibility, and love.”
A public funeral chamber will be held September 6–7 at Armani/Teatro in Milan. The funeral will be private, in accordance with his wishes.
