Life Imitates Art: A Colorful Van Cleef & Arpels Brooch Summons Jonas Wood’s Vibrant Canvases

Discover how life imitates art in unexpected moments of visual synchronicity

For its latest high-jewelry collection, Van Cleef & Arpels evokes the classic 19th-century adventure novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. Among the 300 pieces included in the debut, this Philo Mystérieux brooch dazzles with emeralds, colored sapphires, and diamonds precisely within the house’s Vitrail Mystery Set technique, which gives the illusion of floating gems.

A master of color and line, Jonas Wood fills his vibrant canvases with references culled from both art history and his everyday life. In the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, this 2014 work, Blue Rug Still Life, commands attention with its lively texture and pattern;
