A Gilded Age-era mansion in Manhattan is on the market, for $49.9 million. It was previously listed for $72.5 million, in 2023, and it is the only fully restored Stanford White-designed residence on Fifth Avenue. White is, in part, known for his work under the architecture firm McKim, Mead & White; the esteemed trio designed sites like the Morgan Library & Museum, Columbia University, the Brooklyn Museum, et al.

This 25-foot-wide limestone dwelling is located at 973 Fifth Avenue and boasts over 16,000 square feet across seven levels. It is listed by Carrie Chiang, Andres Perea-Garzon, and Lesley Schulhof of the Corcoran Group.

Built in 1910, the single-family townhouse features 11 bedrooms, seven full baths, and three powder rooms. Amenities include heated floors, a media room, a library, both marble flooring and hardwood flooring, and panoramic views of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Central Park. Additionally, this mansion is part of Cook Block, where no buildings can exceed six stories, making for optimal privacy and natural light.

The main bedrooms feature custom marble soaking tubs and fixtures by both Barber Wilsons and P.E. Guerin. Other features include a linen room, a private courtyard, a silver and jewelry vault, sizable cedar closets, a steam room made of Venetian plaster, and a climate-controlled wine cellar. A separate entrance at the rear of the edifice also allows for discreet deliveries.

A multi-year restoration ensured the preservation and modernization of this historic home. Additions and changes include a modernized elevator, nine wood-burning fireplaces that have been fully restored, individual HVAC zones for each room, a water purification system, and a limestone staircase that has also been fully restored and is embellished with its original wrought-iron railing.

Other standout design elements include 16-ft. ceilings, hand-carved marble fireplaces, painted wood-beamed ceilings, a rooftop terrace and garden, French stained-glass windows, and five kitchens, each serving a different purpose (staff kitchen, pantry, serving kitchen, a chef kitchen, and a family kitchen). One such kitchen possesses a waterfall island made of Carrara marble, as well as restaurant-worthy appliances from Hobart, Wolf, and Sub-Zero.
