Discover Where the Art World Is Traveling This Summer

“A location becomes more attractive to me when it is indelibly linked to a great book. In 1958, the English writer Patrick Leigh Fermor published Mani, an unforgettable travel tome on the rugged peninsula in the southern Peloponnese of Greece. Years later, he and his wife built a house—potentially, as far as I am concerned, one of the most perfect in the world—in Kardamyli, in Mani, where they lived for the rest of their lives. The house now belongs to the Benaki Museum in Athens, and it hosts fellowships and people who would like to rent it. I will be based there this season, writing. And in my spare time walking among the olive trees and blooming asphodels, visiting churches and towers in remote locations, and sitting on a rocky beach at sunset, sipping the Mediterranean liqueur mastiha.”

“I’m heading to Aspen to open our summer gallery show of new works by Ghada Amer in late June. I am a mountain girl at heart. I love the sea, but in the Rocky Mountains my breathing changes. The air and the landscape give me such a sense of calm. I have had a home there for many years and will spend time with friends and clients. I also intend to enjoy some Aspen Music Festival concerts and artist talks held at the incredible Anderson Ranch Arts Center. And I will hike a lot—my goal is to finally hike from Aspen to Crested Butte.”

“I’ll be exploring the central Loire Valley, starting with the historic city of Orléans, known for Joan of Arc. My drawings and ceramics will be featured in a solo exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, and I’ll also be unveiling 11 monumental bronze sculptures in public parks around the cathedral and museum in a stimulating historical dialogue. In Orléans, I will stay at a charming historic hotel, L’Abeille, in the city center. I will dine at La Chancellerie, a traditional restaurant with typical French cuisine from another time—rich in flavor, clear, and straightforward, with honest and fresh products. The crêpes suzette are divine.”

“The summer for me is about family. Since my siblings and parents live in different countries, it is a tradition to meet in Sardinia each July. We’ve been doing this for over 20 years except for the year of COVID lockdowns. We always stay at the Hotel Pitrizza. Sardinia itself is quite a barren island, with the sea and the sky being the main cultural attractions. The food, however, is on another level. For the best antipasti, we go to Gianni Pedrinelli and sit in the garden. For incredible pizza, we go the Spinnaker in Porto Cervo, or we eat at the hotel, where their in-house pizza maker is legendary.”

“My sister and I are traveling to the port city of Portimão, in southern Portugal, to attend Afro Nation, the largest Afrobeats festival in the world. We’re going to see some of our favorite artists, like Asake and Uncle Waffles. I cannot wait to be surrounded by people who love music from the continent as much as I do. I’ve been waiting to visit Portugal for years, and this is the perfect excuse. When my sister got back from her trip there last summer, she wouldn’t stop talking about how magical the hotel Santa Clara 1728 in Lisbon was. We will end our sisters trip by staying there and eating as many grilled sardines as possible.”

“I’m planning to travel to Martinique for research and a bit of relaxation. The trip was made possible by the Etant Donnés curatorial research grant, and I look forward to being connected to artists from the region for studio visits and more. I’ll start my journey in central Fort-de-France, visiting contemporary art spaces like 14°N 61°W Espace d’Art Contemporain, a place for artist residencies and exhibitions focused on creatives from Martinique and the Caribbean. I’ll then venture off to bask in the beautiful Jardin de Balata, which has over 300 varieties of palm trees, then relocate to the southern coast for a few days to relax on the beach—which is absolutely my favorite place anywhere in the world.”
