Rhapsody, 1975

Consisting of 987 one-foot-square steel panels covering an expanse of more than 150 feet, Jennifer Bartlett’s 1975 work Rhapsody first appeared in art dealer Paula Cooper’s Manhattan gallery space. According to Bartlett, the photographic images are meant to resemble a conversation, where people jump from subject to subject.

Homan-ji Buddhist Temple, 1991

In 1991, Bartlett was invited to design a ceiling installation for the Homan-ji Buddhist temple in Choshi-shi, Japan, as a part of an impressive restoration project. Playing off the original building structure, Bartlett then painted the temple’s sequence of 321 paintings in seven color cycles, using Japanese mineral-based pigments.

“House”, 1977-2007

As a part of her continuous “House” series, Bartlett incorporated small metal plates to create realistic homes among rich landscapes. Originally started in 1977, the artist continued the project until 2007.

“In the Garden”, 1980–83

Known for creating realistic images through an unconventional medium, no better artwork showcases Bartlett’s talent than Pool (1983) from her 1980–83 “In the Garden” series.

Air: 24 Hours, One P.M., 1991-1992

In Bartlett’s ambitious 24-hour series, the artist completed one painting per hour over the course of a year which feature depictions of intimate personal spaces.

Recitative, 2009–10

In Jennifer Bartlett’s 2009–10 work Recitative, different sized panels are used to create the illusion of dots, which she painted to craft bold patterns.
