Raul Mourão
First displayed at the Brazilian artist’s debut solo outing at Nara Roesler earlier this year, a one-ton sculpture will grace the show house grounds
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1967, Raul Mourão is part of a generation of artists that defined Rio’s cultural scene in the 1990s. Commenting on subjects of everyday life, Mourão’s work displaces and redefines familiar symbols and forms. In response to his 2010 research on grids and security systems, among other urban structures, he began to develop sculptures and kinetic installations that can be activated by the audience. He sees public engagement with the sculptures as a metaphor for his own interaction with society and believes that the works’ movements might inspire viewers to consider their own constantly changing reality.

Weighing one ton, the magnificent new artwork on view at the Galerie House of Art and Design, created during a period of isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, was first displayed at the artist’s debut solo outing at Nara Roesler’s New York gallery earlier this year.
