Tiffany & Co. Reimagines Its Iconic Bird on a Rock in a Stunning New Collection
The vision of chief artistic officer Nathalie Verdeille, the legendary Jean Schlumberger motif takes flight through contemporary fine and high jewelry designs
Few motifs in the world of jewelry capture the imaginative whimsy and exceptional craftsmanship of Jean Schlumberger’s legendary “Bird on a Rock.” Originally conceived in 1965 after the visionary French designer encountered a vibrant yellow cockatoo during his travels, the beloved creature has remained an enduring symbol of joy and innovation for Tiffany & Co.
Now, under the expert artistic vision of Nathalie Verdeille, senior vice president and chief artistic officer of jewelry and high jewelry, the storied New York house breathes fresh, modern energy into this heritage icon with new fine and high jewelry from the Bird on a Rock by Tiffany Collection. There are over a dozen new creations across three distinct expressions.
In its latest evolution, Verdeille beautifully balances figurative artistry and abstract fluid forms. A standout is the iconic bird silhouette, hand-sculpted in 18k yellow gold with textural, flame-like wings—a subtle nod to Schlumberger’s archival 1950s Flames earrings—accented by meticulous chevron engravings and an arrangement of hand-set diamonds.
The collection also introduces new Bird on a Rock by Tiffany Wings designs, an abstract interpretation inspired by the symbolic power of flight. Honoring Jean Schlumberger’s legacy of integrating multiple metals within a single design, the newest “Wings” creations feature alternating wings in 18k gold and platinum.
In addition to the fine jewelry pieces, the new Bird on a Rock Feathers high jewelry designs transform the motif into breathtaking pieces that evoke intricate compositions of diamond feathers. Nearly three years in the making, these pieces capture the softness and plumage of the bird’s collar in sculptural platinum, gold, and diamonds.
