Life Imitates Art: A Dior Jewelry Box Reflects the Zesty Work of Beatriz Milhazes

By Lucy Rees

Paying homage to Christian Dior’s long-standing friendship with artists, Cordelia de Castellane, artistic director of Dior maison, introduced CD Entrelace, a grouping that includes this artful jewelry box, which displays the couturier’s initials in intricately rendered straw marquetry.

The zesty, mural-like artwork of Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes reverberates with cascading patterns and kinesthetic geometry in saturated colors, as seen in Roda Coração III (Heart Wheel) (2021). The artist is the subject of a solo exhibition at the Guggenheim in New York through September 14.

Life Imitates Art: A Striking Chandelier Reflects a Haunting Canvas by Ross Bleckner

By Lucy Rees

A haunting canvas by famed New York artist Ross Bleckner, Untitled (Chandelier Painting) (1984), which sold at Phillips in 2018, marks a bold departure from the cosmic, semiabstract paintings that define much of his oeuvre. Suspended within a black background, the glowing light fixture is said to represent themes of loss and dislocation.

The Killarney chandelier by Visual Comfort—made in collaboration with the storied Irish crystal house Waterford—reflects a bold, modern interpretation of the tiered, crystal lighting commissioned by the Guinness family in 1965 for the 900th anniversary of the founding of Westminster Abbey.

Life Imitates Art: A Gabriela Hearst Fringe Coat Evokes Visions of Artist Sarah Zapata’s Technicolor Sculptures

By Lucy Rees

New York artist Sarah Zapata combines traditional methods of handweaving and latch-hooking with industrial carpet-manufacturing techniques to create her Technicolor sculptures and installations. From her “Ruin” series and part of the collection of the Museo de Arte de Lima, Standing on the Edge of Time (2019) uses color division to lure the viewer in.

With an emphasis on innovative construction and sustainable materials, Gabriela Hearst conceives striking ensembles like this dramatic fringe coat made of mulberry silk, leather, and cashmere, which she paired with recycled cotton-linen denim, wide-leg pants for the spring/summer 2025 runway.

Life Imitates Art: A Colorful Van Cleef & Arpels Brooch Summons Jonas Wood’s Vibrant Canvases

By Lucy Rees

For its latest high-jewelry collection, Van Cleef & Arpels evokes the classic 19th-century adventure novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. Among the 300 pieces included in the debut, this Philo Mystérieux brooch dazzles with emeralds, colored sapphires, and diamonds precisely within the house’s Vitrail Mystery Set technique, which gives the illusion of floating gems.

A master of color and line, Jonas Wood fills his vibrant canvases with references culled from both art history and his everyday life. In the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, this 2014 work, Blue Rug Still Life, commands attention with its lively texture and pattern;
