Stella McCartney’s Latest Fashion Collection Reimagines the Work of Frank Stella
With Stella by Stella, McCartney found inspiration in the famed artist’s paintings, transforming artworks into clothing and a limited-edition shoulder bag

Designer Stella McCartney and artist Frank Stella have more than a name in common. There’s a love of both minimalism and maximalism, an ability to reinvent, and now a fashion collaboration. “The Stella woman is dynamic, fearless and embraces many passions,” McCartney says. “This collection was made with that in mind and the garments, which would otherwise be everyday staples, became effortless wearable art.”
For her winter 2022 collection, entitled Stella by Stella, McCartney found inspiration in Stella’s paintings, transforming artworks into clothing and a limited-edition shoulder bag. Finished with the designer’s signature chunky hardware, the striking accessory allows the wearer to take the bursts of color of the artist’s Spectralia (1994) just about anywhere. “The Frayme bag, a new icon and a perfect example of juxtapositions, mixes feminine and masculine energy with an oversized mixed galvanic chain strap and its sculptural lines felt like the perfect canvas for a print inspired by Frank’s work, Spectralia,” says the designer.

First presented at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, McCartney’s collection is just the latest in the designer’s extensive history of connecting with artists, creating clothing, handbags, and accessories with Yoshitomo Nara, Sheila Hicks, Ed Ruscha, and many more blue-chip and emerging talents. “Throughout my career, I’ve been continually inspired by great contemporary artists and their bodies of work,” says McCartney. “In this collection, drawing inspiration from the work of Frank Stella has allowed me to express, through the medium of fashion, a sincere sense of awe and gratitude at the ways in which monumental works of art can have a lasting role in the evolution of design. ”
