Richard Serra, one of the greatest sculptors of the 20th and 21st centuries, passed away on March 26 at his home in Orient, New York. He was 85. Celebrated for his monumental, immersive environments crafted with steel, his spirals, stacks, and columns explored notions of weight and scale in a dazzling new way. Eliciting an often mystical and profound sensation from viewers, Serra’s work had the gravitas of ancient and sacred sites. As well as sculpture, Serra produced drawings throughout his lifetime, revealing his fascinating process and skill as a draughtsman.
