Mickey Muennig’s Casa Luna Lists in Big Sur for $5.5 Million
The moon-inspired home by the Post Ranch Inn architect features ocean views, sculptural curves, and five acres of gardens near Pfeiffer Beach
Casa Luna is an architectural marvel in Big Sur, California, that recently hit the market for $5.5 million. The home was listed by Truszkowski Freedman & Associates of Sotheby’s International Realty – Carmel Brokerage.
Spanning 3,000 square feet, the expansive 1982 property boasts four bedrooms and four full bathrooms, and sits on 5.08 acres. Late American architect and Big Sur legend Mickey Muennig—the visionary behind the Post Ranch Inn, a nearby luxury resort, as well as numerous homes in the vicinity—designed the home. Casa Luna’s scheme was inspired by a visit Muennig took to various small villages in Greece. As stated in the listing, the home echoes the curves of the moon and the rhythms of nature.
Throughout the five-acre plot that Casa Luna occupies are fruit trees, garden beds, and idyllic landscaping, all within a gated community located mere minutes from Pfeiffer Beach. The three-story home also features sculptural walls, an eye-catching central staircase, arched forms, and patios and outdoor spaces with sweeping views of the nearby ocean and mountains.
Casa Luna’s third-floor living room features a fireplace and window wall, while the downstairs dining room leads directly to the property’s garden. The property also contains an additional, detached structure, which the next owner can use for whatever they see fit.
Frequently named one of the country’s top architects, Muennig was honored by the Monterey chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) before his 2021 death. Deeply inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, Muennig was renowned for designing works of organic architecture that complemented the nearby landscapes. Back in 2022, Muennig’s own Big Sur home, a 30-acre compound, sold; it was listed for $6.95 million.
