Mattel Introduces MoMA-Inspired Capsule Collection to Announce Global Partnership
The collaboration sees the museum’s most iconic pieces reinterpreted in unique editions of Barbie, Hot Wheels, and more

The Museum of Modern Art and Mattel, Inc. have announced a five-year global partnership that seeks to redefine how consumers around the world interact with and connect to art. Through the brand’s Mattel Creations platform, the partnership will see some of MoMA’s most iconic works reinterpreted with unique editions of Barbie, Hot Wheels, UNO, and more.
“MoMA has long championed the transformative power of art and design as a catalyst for education and creativity,” says Jesse Goldstein, MoMA’s chief retail officer. “By joining forces with Mattel Creations, we are inviting a generation of new audiences to experience the Museum’s collection in ways that merge contemporary art with creative play and design innovation.”

The capsule collection, which will debut in November, includes seven figures, including Barbie x Vincent van Gogh, Hot Wheels x Jaguar E-Type Roadster, Hot Wheels x Citroën DS 23 Sedan, UNO x MoMA, Magic 8 Ball x Alma Woodsey Thomas, Little People Collector x Salvador Dalí, and Little People Collector x Claude Monet. Each figure is a unique reinterpretation of the works associated with the artist in the product name, for example, the Barbie x Vincent van Gogh is a collectible Barbie doll inspired by The Starry Night, featuring a gown patterned in the artist’s swirling skies. The Hot Wheels x Jaguar E-Type Roadster is a die-cast replica of the “most beautiful car ever made,” and the Magic 8 Ball x Alma Woodsey features aspects of the artist’s abstract Untitled, with nine inspirational phrases.

“This collaboration is more than a product launch, it is a global design partnership,” said Nick Karamanos, Mattel’s senior vice president of entertainment partnerships. “Through Mattel Creations, we have been reimagining our brands as collectible, design-led experiences. Partnering with MoMA enables us to translate some of the world’s most iconic artworks and artists into amazing expressions of culture, design, and storytelling that will resonate with collectors and fans for years to come.”
Beginning November 11, the collection will be available online and at MoMA Design Stores in New York and Japan.
