Loewe Marks 180 Years of Luxury with Celebrity Campaign and Special Editions
The coveted Spanish design house honors a tradition of excellence with a new campaign featuring Julia Garner
Back in 1846, before the puzzle bag, the automobile, and the lightbulb, a collective of leather artisans gathered together in a workshop on a cobblestone street in Madrid to form the leather goods house that would become Loewe in 1872 under the leadership of Enrique Loewe Roessberg. Nobody could have known the changes that would come in the ensuing 180 years as the brand achieved excellence with its commitment to craft and creativity. In honor of the anniversary, Loewe announced an exciting new celebrity-driven campaign, a capsule collection, and more on Monday.
Global brand ambassadors Julia Garner and actress Sissy Spacek are among the six featured in the campaign, which focuses on three bags from different decades of Loewe’s rich history: the beloved Puzzle bag (which premiered in 2015), the 1980s Flamenco clutch, and the 2026 reinvention of the Amazona, a 1975 creation updated by Loewe creative directors Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez. Artist Kara Walker, global brand ambassadors Giselle, Salma Abu Deif, and Kara Wai are also featured in the campaign.
Loewe means “Lion” in German, and the lion is of special importance in the capsule collection. There are playful leonine references inside the buttery smooth calfskin and velvety matte suede Amazona 180 bags, as well as feline motifs on bags throughout the collection. Leather charms and small goods also pay tribute to the big cat.
There’s more to come. Movie star Antonio Banderas narrates an animated film that recalls important moments in the company’s history, including the creation of the Loewe Foundation in 1988, and reflects that the company predates the moon landing and even the telephone. On June 15, Issue 11 of LOEWE Magazine and a supplement will offer a peek inside the atelier as well as put a spotlight on the Amazona handbag’s reflection of the feminist movement in the 1970s. That’s precisely the heritage and history that McCollough and Hernandez leaned into when they created the Amazona 180.
The capsule collection arrives in Loewe stores and on Loewe.com on June 4.
