Kirsten Dunst’s Onetime New York Penthouse Hits the Market for $7 Million

It’s easy to see why Kirsten Dunst fell in love with this stunning pre-war apartment in lower Manhattan. The A-list actress, who has starred in such films as Spider Man and Marie Antoinette, owned the industrial-chic residence for nearly a decade.

She purchased the penthouse in 2007 before selling it in 2018. Now, it’s back on the market, albeit from a different owner, for a cool $6.95 million. Located within the celebrity-loved building 477 Washington, the dwelling in Manhattan’s Hudson Square neighborhood—the nexus of Tribeca, Soho, and West Village—has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The home is perched atop an eight-unit, pre-war co-op and offers stunning views of the city’s west side and the Hudson River.

The current owner installed oversized arched windows in the open-plan living space that mimic the original windows. There are several nods to the original structure, including restored exposed brick and cement ceilings, paired alongside modern renovations, such as wide-plank oak-wood flooring. The apartment is one of the only units in the building to undergo a top-to-bottom restoration. The light-filled apartment features 11-foot-high ceilings, all-new windows, and a brand-new chef’s kitchen with custom features and state-of-the-art appliances.

Apart from the impressive views, the residence features a spacious primary suite with a custom en-suite bath with a vintage clawfoot soaking tub, shower stall, towel warmer, and custom mosaic-tiled floors. Perhaps the most impressive part of the primary suite is the whimsical Narnia-style closet that Dunst installed. The wardrobe seen in the photos connects to a windowed, custom-designed closet once you enter through the doors. The closet has custom built-in features, as well as a dehumidification system. The second bedroom features a custom integrated Murphy bed with a full bathroom for overnight guests, but can easily be used as a den or library.

“There aren’t any apartments in the building as unique as this one,” says listing agent Laura Weinkam of The Corcoran Group. “You have incredible sunset views through the windows.”

The building also has a unique history among artists. Originally built in 1911, the structure was once the venue of the 1978 Canal Zone party, which arguably launched graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat’s career. As an homage to its artistic history, the main residential elevator is lined with graffiti.

“The building retains this raw and gritty old New York loft vibe that is appealing because there’s not a lot of that left in New York,” Weinkam says. “There’s a glass elevator and in the shaft of the elevator there’s shareholder-commissioned graffiti. One of the owners in the building is an artist, and she commissioned her students to come in and do graffiti in the glass elevator.”

As far as the private elevator, Weinkam says that Dunst was instrumental in getting a key-lock elevator entrance for the apartment as a form of security. The building attracts many celebrities for its classic New York loft-style aesthetic, but also for the privacy-seeking practices in place. There are two separate entrances, a dedicated super, and security systems in place. Other celebrities who have reportedly owned here include Casey Affleck, Joaquin Phoenix, and R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe, among others.
