Two hours outside of Lisbon, bustling city streets are transformed into an array of olive trees and vineyards to mark the arrival into Portugal’s picturesque wine region of Alentejo. The area, which channels classic Portuguese architecture and classic countryside living, holds a luxurious gem where visitors can experience first-hand the art of winemaking.

As part of Marriott’s Design Hotels, Torre de Palma, Wine Hotel is unlike many properties you’ll find from the famed hotel franchise’s offerings. Dating back to 1338 as a former stronghold for Portuguese royalty, the property was then purchased and converted into the now family-run hotel and winery which stays true to its roots in both architecture and ethos.

The intimate 19-suite stay offers sumptuous amenities such as a full spa equipped with Turkish baths, horse stables, and a two Michelin-star restaurant. However, the star of the show is the on-site vineyard and winery which gives guests an inside look into the process of crafting some of the region’s most prized wines. Now, a new opportunity brought by Marriott Bonvoy Moments brings a rare chance to not only appreciate the time-loved libation, but makes guests winemakers themselves. For this specific package, the weekend begins with a sunset toast atop the property’s historic tower followed by a “four hands” dinner spearheaded by head chef Miguel Laffan alongside chef Vladmir Veiga, all complemented by a carefully curated selection of the property’s impressive wine list.

However, the true treat occurs on the second day. Guests at the hotel can immerse themselves in the full winemaking experience, beginning with mornings spent among the sun-drenched vines, handpicking clusters of ripe grapes at harvest time. Guided by the estate’s vintners, visitors learn the art and rhythm of the harvest, feeling the texture of the fruit and breathing in the rich, earthy aromas of the vineyard. After getting lost in the vineyards (and stuffing yourself full of grapes), a one-of-a-kind opportunity awaits. Once returning to the property, prepare to get your feet dirty by taking part in the time loved tradition of smashing grapes.

Afterward, tours of the winery (which won best tasting room in 2024 by APENO) reveal each stage of production—from the pressing of grapes to the quiet magic of barrel aging in cool cellars. Throughout the experience, guests can sample a journey throughout the estate’s signature wines, allowing them to savor the very flavors they helped bring to life amid the vines.
