1. The Pridwin

Tucked away on over seven acres of lush greenery overlooking Shelter Island’s picturesque Crescent Beach, the Pridwin is officially reopening after an impressive two-year renovation. Recognized as a go-to destination since 1927 and owned by the Petry family since ’61, this luxurious property is celebrating its 95th year with a brand new look. Overseen by Cape Resorts Vice President Colleen Bashaw, who also assisted with the design of Sag Harbor hotel Baron’s Cove, vintage and contemporary design touches blend together, causing the familiarity of this historic hotel to remain intact, while visitors can also take in its updated façade. One major update includes the completely restored upper lobby, where six original 1972 chandeliers are hung. Offering 16 private cottages on the property, as well as 49 guest rooms inside the hotel, the fresh design is the perfect combination of old and new.

As for amenities, visit the on-site convenience store Edie’s for a light snack or sit down at their Terrace Restaurant for a heartier meal. With its ideal location right on the waterfront, guests are spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing the outdoor activity of the day—be it renting kayaking or fishing equipment. For those not a fan of water sports, the expansive pool offers full food and bar services as well as spectacular coastal views. Additionally, the impressive on-site Sea Spa offers three treatment rooms as well as a hammam, guaranteeing ultimate relaxation.

2. Daunt’s Albatross

As Montauk continues to grow as one of the hottest Summer destinations on the East Coast, it’s no wonder visitors are scrambling to find the chicest hotel property to stay. Having been in his family since 1977, Leo Daunt took over Daunt’s Albatross in 2016, where he decided the motel needed a facelift. He ended up choosing Brooklyn-based Home Studios for the task, where interiors were taken down to the studs, with virtually every surface being redone in the the guest rooms, lobby, pool area, and courtyard. The result? A modern day sanctuary where a soft color palette of grays, browns, whites, and blues are incorporated into the lobby and 24 guest rooms as an homage to Montauk’s picturesque beaches. For those planning a longer stay, the property also offers deluxe rooms, which are equipped with a personal kitchenette.

When venturing outside the room, expect to see a number of smokeless Breeo fire pits scattered throughout the stunning center courtyard, where guests can enjoy roasting up s’mores at the end of the evening. A pool is available to guests who aren’t in the mood for a beach day, and later they can enjoy in-room dining from the sister restaurant, Bird on the Roof.

3. The Chequit

In celebration of its 150th anniversary, Shelter Island staple the Chequit officially reopened during Memorial Day weekend after going through a lengthy renovation. In addition to refurbishing 19 guest rooms in the main building, two new additional buildings holding 16 guest rooms have also been added to this historic property. Spearheading the design and architecture, Glen & Co Architecture wanted to stay true to the warm and welcoming feel of the hotel, while making sure it appeared fresh. As a result, the great room has been renovated to incorporate soft, muted shades of white and beige while custom-designed furniture is placed to create a comfortable first impression. A similar color palette can be found in the guest bedrooms, where contemporary furnishings are added as a chic touch.

In addition to the refurbished great room and bedrooms, three new food and beverage concepts developed by Stacey Soloviev and spearheaded by chef Noah Schwartz are now fixtures at the property: New asian cuisine eatery Weakfish Sushi & Noodle, coffee shop and wine bar concept Heights Cafe & Wine Bar, as well as farm-to-table New American restaurant The Tavern. Last but not least, The Chequit just recently launched its new artist-in-residence program, to be held in its exhibition gallery, where works will be spotlighted throughout the property. Shelter Island based artist Ana Martínez Orizondo kicks off the program with her colorful works.
